Outline of the competition

Miss Universe is an annual international beauty pageant that is run by the Miss Universe Organisation. It is currently acquired by Donald Trump and NBC, and is one of the most anticipated beauty pageants in the world.

On Sunday 11th January, the 2014 candidates took part in the Celebration of Nations Parade and Festival in Downtown Doral Park, introducing themselves to the public with an afternoon of live music, dancing, and socialising.

Following on from a golf putting tournament, zumba lessons and a cooking contest, the Miss Universe preliminaries will take place on January 21st. All 88 contestants from around the world will be scored across three categories; swimsuit, evening gown and a personality interview.

This year’s Miss Universe judges orignate from the world of boxing, fashion, televison and film and include Manny Pacquiao, Kristin Cavallari, William Levy, Lisa Vanderpump and Louise Roe. They will decide which 15 women go straight into the National Costume round the same night, with the public selecting a 16th semi-finalist via internet voting.

The 63rd annual Miss Universe pageant final will then take place on Sunday 25th January, where the judges will decide who is to be crowned Gabriela Isler’s successor.

Miss Universe 2014 - betting by the numbers

0: The candidate that made the semifinals through the internet fan vote has never won Miss Universe. In 2013, Ariella Arida (Philippines) set the public fan vote record by finishing as 3rd runner-up.

1: the number of times Russia has won the Miss Universe pageant – Oxana Fedorova in 2002. However, she was dethroned by Miss Panama amid rumours she was pregnant.

Although the Miss Universe Organisation refuse to recognise Fedorova as a previous winner, she is generally regarded as one by the public and was even voted the most beautiful Miss Universe of all time in 2011. Yulia Alipova, this year’s Miss Russia, is available at 13.590* - an implied probability of 7.36%.

2: The number of times India and Australia have won the Miss Universe contest. Novonita Lodh, Miss India, is the fourth favourite this year with odds of 10.800*, whilst Tegan Martin, Miss Australia, is available at 17.210*.

6: Six of the eight American winners won their title on home turf (where the contest was founded). Most recently, Olivia Culpo won in Las Vegas in 2012. Nia Sanchez, this year’s Miss USA, is the 6.410* favourite to take home the crown in Miami.

7: The number of times Venezuela has won the Miss Universe competition, which is the second highest behind USA (who have 8 winners). Venezuela have also won three of the last six Miss Universe pageants, including 2013, with Migbelis Lynette Castellanos available at 9.340* this year.

10.800: The odds that were previously available at Pinnacle Sports for USA to win Miss Universe 2012 (which they did). These are the exact same odds that are currently available for Miss India to win this year’s Miss Universe.

26: Brook Lee (USA) became the oldest Miss Universe winner at the age of 26 years, 128 days when she was crowned on May 16, 1997. Of this year’s main contenders, Miss USA (24) 6.410* and Miss Russia (24) 13.590* are the oldest.

41.580: The odds that were previously available at Pinnacle Sports for Angola to win Miss Universe in 2011 (which they did). Miss Australia is this year’s outside bet at 17.210* - an implied probability of 5.81%.

56: The number of years since Colombia last won the Miss Universe pageant (1958). Paulina Vega, this year’s Miss Colombia, is the third favourite with odds of 9.840* - an implied probability of 10.16%.

Miss Universe vs. Miss World

Following our Miss World 2014 preview, bettors may be wondering what the difference is between the two pageants. The two are separate business enterprises, with Miss Universe far more successful at the moment, even beating an NBA playoff game in the ratings. Miss World may not be as commercialised, but is considered the oldest surviving beauty pageant as it was created one year prior to Miss Universe.

The Miss Universe pageant is considered to have a higher status than Miss World. Perhaps this is because of the coverage it receives in the USA, whilst Miss World (which was created in Britain) receives far less. The Miss Universe Organisation also holds Miss USA, in which contestants from States all over the country will compete for the crown. Despite this, the Miss Universe and Miss World pageants are held at different times in the year so that they do not conflict with one another.

Some viewers argue the main difference between the two is that Miss World is more philanthropic, while Miss Universe unites countries from all over the world in order to promote peace. In terms of judging, Miss Universe is a lot clearer. The top 15 are usually easy to predict and the scores are televised with the selection criteria made extremely clear; swimsuit, then evening gown, followed by personality interview.

With the preliminaries starting on January 21st and the winner being crowned on the 25th, bettors should consider all of these trends before selecting their 2014 Miss Universe winner.
