Wawrinka should have too much game for GGL
The final four places in the quarter finals of the Men's Singles at the 2015 Australian Open are up for grabs on Monday and after correctly predicting Andy Murray's 3-1 win over Grigor Dimitrov on Sunday, Sean Calvert is back with more bets for today...
Sunday was a highly stressful, but ultimately profitable day of men's tennis betting at the Australian Open, thanks to Andy Murray's three sets to one win over Grigor Dimitrov.
Murray looked like he was struggling in the fourth set at a break down, but the Scot came back to stun the Bulgarian and the match finished on a dead net cord, which was the kind of luck that's been sorely missing of late.
Indeed, earlier in the day Andreas Seppi had blown a two set lead and failed to take a match point to win in four against Nick Kyrgios, which was painful in the extreme, and yet another five set loss in this particular tournament.
Perhaps the luck has changed with that net cord and the first bet that appeals on Monday is to take Feliciano Lopez to land the opening set of his 6am UK time start with Milos Raonic on a tie break.
For me, Raonic is far too short in price in this match and Lopez offers some decent value here, but there's also a very good chance that we'll see a breaker in the opener and Raonic is 3.613/5 to win it and Lopez 6.05/1.
After hitting both posts with John Isner to win set one against Gilles Muller on a tie break and Raonic being a little tight on price at 3.613/5 I'm happy to side with the Spanish lefty here at 6.05/1.
Both players have won all three of their tie breaks in this tournament so far and Lopez has won two of his three previous breakers against Raonic, so there's some decent value on that one.
Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka both look to have comfortable routes through to the quarter finals against Gilles Muller and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez respectively and 3-0 bets in those two look good.
Garcia Lopez has enjoyed a nice route through to the fourth round, with wins over a hobbled Vasek Pospisil, a hapless Alejandro Gonzalez, and a retirement from Peter Gojowczyk so far.
Wawrinka will surely prove a class above on these quick Melbourne courts and a repeat of GGL's French Open win over Wawrinka from last spring looks highly unlikely in this rematch.
Stan has a 6-3 career lead over the Spaniard and all of GGL's wins have come on clay and on a hard court he's only twice beaten a top-20 opponent in a major.
Those opponents were clay-loving Juan Monaco and Juan Ignacio Chela and other than a shock win over an out of sorts Murray at Indian Wells in 2012 GGL hasn't beaten a top-10 player on a hard court since 2010.
Remaining solid and trying to set up his flashy single-handed backhand is unlikely to yield much in the way of success for the Spaniard and unless Stan has a mid-match lapse in concentration - which is always possible - this looks comfortable for the Swiss.
The 3-0 to Wawrinka is around the 1.75/7 mark and early risers watching this 02:15 UK time clash will doubtless be lumping on the defending champion in this one.
As for my outrights, well, we're still in the game with Kei Nishikori and Tomas Berdych and hopefully Kei can make his way past David Ferrer on Monday and give us two quarter finalists.
It probably won't be straightforward, although even Ferrer will do well to come back from that brutal battle with Gilles Simon, and the Japanese can outlast the Spaniard in that one.
