This Week in Football History: The best 'goal of the month' ever

What a strike from this man in December 06

Adrian North reflects on December 2006 when we saw the greatest selection of goals one month of the Premier League has ever seen...

2006/07 was a fairly mundane season and one the history books look back on with a mere casual glance. Man United easily won the league, Wigan performed their usually end-of-season 'pass without studying' routine and West Ham, inspired by the controversially bought Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez would incredibly string together a series of results that saw the Hammers survive on the last day of the season at the expense of Sheffield United.

The Tevez/Mascherano affair would continue long into the 07/08 season but my lasting memory of 06/07 is Match of the Day's December 'Goal of the Month' competition.

If anyone claims to have found a better collection of goals from one month of Premier League football than this then that person is straight up lying.

Keith Gillespie, Morten Gamst Pederson, Matty Taylor (who smashed in a few screamers back in the day), Michael Essien, David Bentley, Tom Huddlestone, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Paul Scholes and Robin van Persie all scored absolute blinders in a Goal of the Month collection that just reeks of Premier League nostalgia.

Scholes' volley is the best though. 30-yards, dropping from orbit and bang, underside of the bar in. He didn't score too many tap-ins did he?

At the risk of being called a liar by Adrian, can you recall a better month? Was Scholes' goal the best of the bunch? Let us know by commenting below or tweeting @Betfair
