Down and out: Gerrard's late goal wasn't enough for Liverpool
Liverpool will play Europa League football after failing to beat FC Basel, while Arsenal recorded a confidence-boosting win in Turkey. Mike Norman has all tonight's In-Play odds details...
Liverpool's return to the Champions League was a short-lived one after they were eliminated from the competition following a 1-1 draw with FC Basel this evening.
Only a win for Brendan Rodgers' men would have been good enough to secure second spot in Group B behind Real Madrid but it was the Swiss side who started the game on the front foot and scored a deserved opener midway through the first half.
After some sloppy defending from the Reds, Fabian Frei played a neat give-and-go with Luca Zuffi before smashing home a left-footed shot from the edge of the area.
Frei was matched at 38.037/1 to score first and it was enough to reward those who backed the 0-1 Half Time Score at 8.615/2.
Any chance Liverpool had of getting back in the game seemingly disappeared when half-time substitute Lazor Markovic was controversially shown a straight red card for raising his hand, but with just under 10 minutes of normal time remaining Steven Gerrard fired home a superb free-kick to give his side a lifeline.
You sensed a dramatic winner for the home side was on its way, and it very nearly came when a deflected Jordan Henderson header seemed to wrong foot the Basel goalkeeper before he recovered to grab the ball on the line.
Late long range efforts form Henderson and Gerrard also threatened, but it wasn't to be for Liverpool who will now go into the Europa League. The Draw was matched at 6.86/1 with the 1-1 Correct Score hitting a high of 8.88/1.
In tonight's other game featuring an English club Arsenal comfortably beat Galatasaray 1-4 in Turkey but were unable to claim top spot in Group D.
Lukas Podolski - matched at 9.617/2 in the First Goalscorer market - put the Gunners ahead inside three minutes, and the game was effectively over by the half hour mark thanks to a brace from Aaron Ramsey, his second goal a quite sensational half volley from all of 30 yards.
But with Borussia Dortmund drawing with Anderlecht in the group's other game only a six-goal victory for Arsene Wenger's men would have taken them top of the standings.
Arsenal were matched at a high of 2.6213/8 to win the game, while Podolski's second goal of the night late on rewarded those who back the 1-4 Correct Score at 70.069/1.
To Win the Champions League
Bayern Munich - 4.2
Real Madrid - 4.3
Barcelona - 6.8

20.0 and upwards the rest
