Championship Betting: Improving Brum to record another away win

Brum manager Gary Rowett is looking for his fifth win in seven

It's the final set of fixtures before the busy Christmas and New Year schedule sorts out the men from the boys, and Mike Norman is trying to get a bit of festive spending money with these three wagers...

Fulham 2.35/4 v Sheff Wed 3.55/2; The Draw 3.55n/a

Fulham have been climbing the Championship table ever since Kit Symons took over from Felix Magath and a win over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday afternoon will keep them within touching distance of the play-offs.

Hugo Rodallega has been in excellent form of late for the Cottagers with four goals in five games, and when you also look at the names of Fulham's other recent scorers - Bryan Ruiz, Scott Parker, and Ross McCormack - then you start to understand just how talented this team actually are.

Consistency is Fulham's main problem right now; they've won three of their last five and followed a 2-1 win at Brighton with a 0-5 drubbing at home to Watford before winning on the road again at Leeds last week.

The Owls went 11 games without a win prior to beating Wigan and Blackburn recently. The feeling was that Stuart Gray's men had turned the corner but last Saturday they put in another disappointing display and lost at home to out-of-form Wolves.

Symons' men obviously have to put that shocking home loss to Watford behind them here, but they're the better side on current form and the better side on paper and have to be the recommended wager.

Huddersfield 2.265/4 v Birmingham 3.412/5; The Draw 3.711/4

Even before Gary Rowett took over at St Andrew's Birmingham always had to be considered away from home. Their home form was abysmal under Lee Clark but on their travels they had a really good record and often won at decent odds.

I consider odds of 3.412/5 about a Birmingham win here decent also, especially as under Rowett the Blues are in much better form than they were under Clark.

Brum have won four of their last six in the Championship including a 6-1 thrashing of Reading last Saturday so confidence will surely by very high. Away from home they continue to perform well, conceding just one goal in their last three games and taking four points.

Huddersfield on the other hand can't stop conceding at the moment. Chris Powell's men shipped five at Norwich last weekend - albeit with 10 men - and that comes not long after the conceded three at Derby and three at Fulham in November.

The Terriers have won just one of their last six, and although they've been in good form at the John Smith's Stadium in recent weeks I'm prepared to take a chance on the resurget Blues to record another away win.

Wigan 1.9720/21 v Rotherham 4.67/2; The Draw 3.55n/a

Wigan have slipped to 23rd in the table, just four points ahead of hapless Blackpool, and yet here they are at odds-on to win a Championship game despite winning just one of their last 16 matches.

True, Saturday's opposition is Rotherham, a side also towards the bottom of the table, but I'm quite sure the Latics have played some similar sides during this awful run they are on and also failed to win - like failing to beat Millwall at home, and losing to woefully out of form Brighton for example.

And despite Rotherham's lowly position Steve Evans' side have actually been very difficult to beat in recent weeks.

The Millers have drawn six of their last nine league matches in fact, and they've conceded just two goals in their last five suggesting that Evans puts an emphasis on keeping it tight at the back and building from there.

There's no doubt Wigan will improve under Malky Mackay, and it could well be here, but for a side who has won just one of 16 matches to be odds-on against a well-organised team who don't lose often, then I have to be a layer.
