Cisse double ends Chelsea's unbeaten run

Papiss Cisse was the man for Newcastle on Saturday

Papiss Cisse scored twice off the bench as Newcastle ended Chelsea's unbeaten start to the season at St James' Park, Alex Johnson reports...

Jose Mourinho's side, who hadn't lost in 14 league games and 23 in total this season, predictably started well, though the home side looked like they had set up to try and keep the game tight early on and not offer up early chances.

Willian had other ideas as he first tried his luck with a shot from outside the area that flew a couple of feet wide of goalkeeper Rob Elliot's goal before he then came a lot closer when his curling shot had Elliot scrambling, but it went just wide of the post.

Eden Hazard was also causing problems with his direct running from deep and he fired in a shot that went wide as the league leaders tried to make their early dominance count.

The home side stuck to their task well and had their first real chance of the game when Jack Colback was put through in the area by Ayoze Perez but Thibaut Courtois was quick off his line and saved the former Sunderland player's shot with his foot.

This seemed to give the Magpies some confidence they could get at Chelsea and Colback again threatened, firing in a rocket of a shot over the crossbar and the Magpies were the better side up to the half-time whistle.

They suffered a blow at the break though when Elliot had to go off injured and he was replaced by third-choice Keeper Jak Alnwick, who was making his debut for the club.

Alan Pardew also decided to make an early change in attack and replaced Remy Cabella with Papiss Cisse, who was unlucky not to start after scoring in midweek against Burnley.

It proved to be a masterstroke as Cisse made the breakthrough in the 57th minute, when after a crunching Colback challenge on Hazard he released Sammy Ameobi, who crossed the ball in and Gary Cahill could only slice his attempted clearance to the Senegal international, who tapped home from two yards and in the process ended Chelsea's run of not conceding a goal in all competitions at 498 minutes.

The away side looked a little ragged after that and Moussa Sissoko headed wide when well placed, though they soon got their composure back and Hazard was unlucky not to equalise when his rasping shot rattled the post after beating Alnwick all ends up.

The Geordie faithful were sent into raptures just 90 seconds after that scare when Sissoko broke down the other end and looked to seal it, though he slipped with Courtois advancing towards him but the Frenchman somehow found Cisse, who slotted in to double his side's advantage.

The Blues then lost their heads a little with Cesc Fabregas booked for a foul in the build up to the second goal, while Diego Costa was cautioned by referee Martin Atkinson for dissent, though it was Newcastle who would pay the price for ill-discipline as eight minutes from time Steven Taylor was sent off for picking up a second yellow card after fouling Andre Schurrle.

They were instantly punished as Fabregas whipped over the free-kick and Didier Drogba, on as a substitute, headed home from close range and the west London side now sensed blood and laid siege to the Magpies' goal from then on.

You sensed the equaliser was coming, though the young goalkeeper Alnwick was not fazed as he first tipped over a shot from Costa before producing a superb save from Filipe Luis' 30-yard effort as Newcastle held on for a famous win as Jose Mourinho's winless record at St James' Park continued for a fifth match.
