Will Bony be a success in Man City blue?
It seemed quite a restrained transfer window just gone yet Premier League clubs still spent a total of 130 million as Alex Johnson reports...
The trio of Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal accounted for around half of the total spend, as all bar two Premier Leagues - Liverpool and Newcastle - added to their squad during January.
The Premier League's top two made the two biggest signings of the window. Chelsea added Fiorentina's flying Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado for 27 million to add a new creative threat to their side. It was a deal finally completed on deadline day, but mooted around for days beforehand. While Mohamed Salah left for the Viola as part of the deal, Chelsea recouped most of the money spent on Cuadrado by selling Andre Schurrle to Wolfsburg, while the league leaders also flogged Ryan Bertrand to Southampton.
Manchester City made the most expensive January signing when they paid 28 million to bring Wilfried Bony to the Etihad from Swansea. The Ivory Coast forward, who is currently on African Cup of Nations duty, is a proven Premier League goalscorer and Manuel Pellegrini is hopeful Bony can get the goals to help fire them to the title. Bony's addition was the only new face brought to the club during the window but they did lose two bit-part players as Matija Nastasic left to join Schalke on loan and Scott Sinclair went to Aston Villa till the end of the season.
Arsenal were left short on defenders during the first half of the season, so it was no surprise to see them add a new centre back to their ranks. Arsene Wenger decided the Brazilian defender Gabriel was the one he wanted, so paid 11.2 million to bring the 24-year-old to the Emirates from Villarreal. He might be one for the future, but Gabriel is likely to be thrown straight into the action. Wenger also signed young Polish midfielder Krystian Bielik for 2.5 million from Legia Warsaw and will have high hopes for the 17-year-old. Wenger lost four forwards during the window, the most high-profile of which was Lukas Podolski going to Inter Milan. Joel Campbell went to Villarreal as part of the Gabriel deal, while Yaya Sanogo went on loan to Crystal Palace and Benik Afobe joined Wolves.
Manchester United had something of an odd window. They were linked with a whole host of top European footballers, but in the end brought in two free transfers and one obscure loan. Victor Valdes is the only household name out of the additions, with the other two being Sadiq El Fitouri, who arrived from Salford City, and Andy Kellet, who came in on loan from Bolton on transfer deadline day. United allowed Wilfried Zaha to join Crystal Palace for a reported fee of 6 million - less than half they paid for him - and stalwart Darren Fletcher agreed a free transfer move to West Brom late on deadline day. Elsewhere, Michael Keane made his loan at Burnley a permanent move, while Will Keane, Ben Amos and Jesse Lingard all went to the Championship on loans.
Southampton are riding high in the Premier League and Ronald Koeman strengthened his squad during January. After adding Eljero Elia on loan early in the window, he added yet again on deadline day with the signing of precocious Serbian international midfielder Filip Djuricic on loan from Benfica. Koeman also spent 10 million to turn Ryan Bertrand's loan from Chelsea into a permanent move. Exits from St Mary's included Jack Cork, who joined Swansea for 3 million, and Jos Hooiveld who went on loan to Millwall.
It was an unusually quiet transfer window for Spurs, with their only addition coming on deadline day as they secured the signature of highly-rated young MK Dons midfielder Dele Alli for 5 million. He will, however, spend the rest of this season at Stadium MK. There were more exits than arrivals at White Hart Lane, including Kyle Naughton joining Swansea, Aaron Lennon going on loan to Everton, and Benoit Assou-Ekotto being released.
It was a quiet window at Anfield, as Liverpool signed no-one and only let misfits Oussama Assaidi and Suso leave for Al Ahli and AC Milan respectively. It was almost as quiet at West Ham, though it would have been different had they secured the late signing of Emmanuel Adebayor on loan. The only new face for Sam Allardyce was defender Doneil Henry from Apollon Limassol, while Mauro Zarate went out on loan to QPR.
Swansea didn't spend anything on replacing their top scorer, Bony, and will hope Bafetimbi Gomis can get the goals for them - they held onto the striker despite interest from West Ham and Palace. As well as Naughton and Cork, Garry Monk's only other addition is Portuguese forward Nelson Oliviera on loan from Benfica.
It was fairly uneventful for a lot of teams in the middle of the Premier League. German defender Philipp Wollscheid was the only addition at Stoke, while Newcastle declined to bolster their ranks but did allow Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and David Santon to leave for Italy, while four squad players all went to Rangers on loan. At Everton, the loan of former England winger Lennon was the only new face while Roberto Martinez allowed veteran striker Samuel Eto'o to join Sampdoria.
Crystal Palace were the busiest dealers in January as Alan Pardew looks to put his stamp on the squad. Zaha arrived for 6 million, while they also spent 5.75 million to bring Jordon Mutch in from QPR. Other new additions include Lee Chung-yong from Bolton and Pape Souare from Lille. Pardew also boosted his strike-force by getting Sanogo on loan from Arsenal and signing former Newcastle forward Shola Ameobi on a short-term deal.
Sunderland made just the one signing and Jermain Defoe will surely add goals, something which plagued them in the first half of the season. The deal saw Jozy Altidore go the other way, while Gus Poyet also moved on misfits Charis Mavrias and Cabral.
Tony Pulis worked hard to overhaul the West Brom squad and was linked with a host of faces, but in the end only got two signings. He brought in Callum McManaman from Wigan for 4.75 million and added Fletcher on a free from United. Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert will be hoping new Spanish midfielder Carles Gil can add creativity and goals at Villa Park, while he also took a gamble by taking Sinclair from Man City.
Burnley only brought in Keane on loan from United during a quiet month, while Hull's one addition was Dame N'Doye. QPR were another linked with a plethora of faces, but the loan signing of Zarate from West Ham was the only new signing.
Leicester were the only team down the bottom half to take a punt on a major signing. They spent a club record 9.5 million to bring in striker Andrej Kramaric, but they did beat Chelsea to his signing. Nigel Pearson will be hoping the Croat can find his goalscoring boots quickly and be a gamble that pays off.
