Frampton vs. Avalos – Tale of the tape
Last time out Carl Frampton beat Kiko Martinez via unanimous decision to claim the IBF Super Bantamweight title.
The bout took place in front of 16,000 fans in a purpose-built outdoor arena at the Titanic Quarter in Belfast, and with Frampton knocking Martinez down in the fifth round, he outpointed the Spaniard 119-108, 119-108 and 118-111 on the scorecards.
That was the second time Frampton beat Martinez in just 12 months, with the former being contested for the IBF Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight and EBU Super Bantamweight titles.
Following the victory, Frampton openly stated that the only man he would be interested in fighting next was Scott Quigg.
However, Frampton’s next fight is IBF mandatory, and will take place against American challenger Christopher Avalos. Despite suffering severe hand damage in his fight with Martinez, Frampton has recovered in time to resume training.
Avalos stopped Yasutaka Ishimoto in May last year and has since beaten Jose Cen Torres to take his professional boxing record to 25-0-2.
The two defeats he suffered came at the hands of Chris Martin and Jhonatan Romero respectively and were both settled via a split decision. However, the fight with Romero was controversial as the majority thought Avalos did more than enough to win.
Frampton is a class above those two fighters, and will represent the biggest challenge of Avalos’ career to date. What’s more, the American has only fought outside of the USA once, which was in China for his win over Ishimoto. How will he react when entering the noisy Odyssey Arena in Frampton’s home City of Belfast? The Irishman has already fought there five times, winning all by knockout.
Frampton vs. Avalos – What the odds suggest
The two-way market sees Frampton as the massive 1.105 favourite to defend his title, meaning Avalos only has a 13.33% chance of ending the Irishman's undefeated record according to the odds.
In addition to the two-way market Frampton vs. Avalos betting will also be available via the OVER/UNDER total rounds market.
Speaking ahead of the fight, Avalos has insisted he will knock Frampton out in five or six rounds, while the Irishman has assured his fans it won’t go the distance. Looking at each of the respective boxer’s professional records, bettors can try to predict which round the fight will end in.
Frampton has fought in eight fights scheduled for 12 rounds, winning them all. He has won six by knockout (75%), five of which have been stopped earlier than the eighth round. Avalos is much less experienced. His only 12 round fight was against Ishimoto and he knocked him out in the eighth round too.
Can Avalos go the distance against Frampton? Not many boxers are as physically fit as the Irishman, and he showed his unbelievable endurance in that grueling victory over Martinez last year. The question remains whether Frampton will look past Avalos, and become complacent, especially given his plans to fight Scott Quigg and Guillermo Rigondeaux later in the year? But that's up to bettors to decide.
