Wilfried Zaha is Crystal Palace's to keep once again
Michael Lintorn picks out three Premier League winners and three losers from a tepid deadline day...
WINNERS
Chelsea
Though Chelsea's poor history at integrating attacking winter signings is a worry, their business itself can't be faulted. The Blues recruited Juan Cuadrado for around 23.3 million and made most of that money back selling the unwanted Andre Schurrle to Wolfsburg. Factor in the 10 million that they raised for Ryan Bertrand, a youth prospect who had started one Premier League game for them in the previous 22 months, and the day couldn't have gone much better for the 1.330/100 title favourites.
Crystal Palace
The word irony is used far too often in football, but there was something striking about the team that Tony Pulis walked out on due to transfer grievances adding four players on deadline day and eight in the window as his new employers West Brom struggled to get pens on paper. A permanent switch for Wilfried Zaha was the highlight, while Lee Chung-yong is also an intriguing capture.
Tottenham
The Lilywhites conducted some fringe-trimming by releasing Benoit Assou-Ekotto and loaning Aaron Lennon to Everton, completed a 5 million deal for one of the Football League's most in-demand youngsters in MK Dons' 18-year-old midfielder Dele Alli, and signed Harry Kane up until 2020.
LOSERS
QPR
Even with Tony Fernandes tweeting in the morning to warn that he didn't foresee any movement, QPR managed to disappoint on deadline day. They undermined their one January arrival, Mauro Zarate, by trying to send him back to parent club West Ham in an illegal effort to take Matt Jarvis on loan off them instead. Surprisingly, there are still two sides shorter than their 1.748/11 to be relegated.
West Brom
Big things were expected of the Baggies with a master of the deadline-day-transfer art Tony Pulis steering the operation, yet only one of their four leading targets was landed - Darren Fletcher - as negotiations for Carlton Cole, Martin Olsson and Etienne Capoue broke down. Their sole buy in the month prior was Wigan winger Callum McManaman, filling a squad spot vacated by Silvestre Varela, so Pulis didn't really get to make his mark in the manner that he did at Crystal Palace last year.
West Ham
If West Ham had said that they weren't planning any deadline-day action, there wouldn't have been much grumbling: they are performing better than forecast and didn't sell any first-teamers. Instead, they built up late excitement - "Dad has just landed in France" (Jack Sullivan) and "Don't go to bed" (David Gold) - delivered nothing and made two current players, Matt Jarvis and fan favourite Carlton Cole, feel worthless, with aborted last-minute attempts to shift them. Admittedly, Cole staying rescued the mood of supporters.
