Spurs 2-1 Arsenal

Harry Kane scored twice on Saturday

Harry Kane scored twice as Spurs came from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1 in the north London derby at White Hart Lane.

Two in-form sides, two in-form strikers, two local rivals. Tottenham Hotspur and Harry Kane hosted Arsenal and Olivier Giroud with local bragging rights up for grabs as well as precious points in the race for the Champions League.

Arsenal came into the game well fancied having beaten Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad only a few weeks ago and, coupled with Spurs' poor home record, it looked like the Gunners would leave White Hart Lane with the points.

The visitors forged ahead inside 11 minutes thanks to Mesut Ozil's close-range volley. Danny Welbeck, making his return after injury, left Danny Rose trailing in his wake on the right flank before cutting the ball back for Giroud and his sliced shot fell perfectly for the German World Cup winner to sidefoot home.

In truth the goal came against the run of play as Tottenham made a bright start and Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina had already made a super stop to deny Kane inside five minutes.

Arsenal's new number one would be called into action on numerous occasions as Spurs dominated the remainder of the first half as they flooded forward and pinned Arsenal back. Kane would be denied again, before Ryan Mason, Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen all saw efforts parried away before the half-time break.

Mauricio Pocchettino didn't panic at the break and his side came out and showed great patience in the second half to keep playing the same way as they again kept Arsenal on the back foot.

Arsene Wenger could do little from the sidelines to stop their momentum and the pressure finally told on 56 minutes. Dembele glanced a header goalwards at the near post and when Ospina could only parry it down it fell into the path of Kane who made no mistake from six yards.

White Hart Lane erupted with noise as the home side celebrated and set about searching for a winning goal. Arsenal briefly threatened to edge in front again as Hugo Lloris made two good saves in a minute to keep out Welbeck's curler and Laurent Koscielny's header around the hour mark.

However, it was the hosts who continued to dominate and the lively midfield pair of Mason and Nabil Bentaleb were quicker to every loose ball than their opponents.

Erik Lamela twice slipped around the penalty spot as he tried to pull the trigger and saw efforts loop well over the bar, while Kane was denied once again by Ospina from close range after Dembele's shot had been saved.

Still the hosts pressed for the winner and Eriksen curled a free-kick narrowly over the bar from 25 yards. The home fans continued to cheer their side on and they were finally rewarded with just four minutes left on the clock.

Arsenal just couldn't get out of their own half in the closing stages and their defence cracked. The hard-working Mason curled a cross towards the far post where Kane rose above Koscielny to plant a header back across Ospina to send the home fans into raptures.

Another excellent display from Kane, in front of the watching Roy Hodgson, and the home side were able to hold on fairly easily as the Gunners tried in vain to get something out of the game in the final moments.

The win lifts Spurs into the top four, ahead of Arsenal, and gives them hope that they might play Champions League football again next season.
