The stats indicate that QPR chairman Tony Fernandes will be searching for another new manager within nine months
Seven relegation-battling Premier League clubs this decade have changed manager after the winter transfer window has closed. Michael Lintorn studied how each fared, and the results should terrify both QPR fans and the candidates to succeed Harry Redknapp...
NEIL ADAMS (Norwich)
Season: 2013/14
Relegated: Yes
Record: P5 W0 D1 L4
Starting Position: 17th
Finishing Position: 18th
Length of Tenure: Nine months
Chris Hughton's successor was practically positioned to fail with five games left and four of them against Liverpool, Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal. He did just that and then struggled in the Championship, resigning last month.
FELIX MAGATH (Fulham)
Season: 2013/14
Relegated: Yes
Record: P12 W3 D3 L6
Starting Position: 20th
Finishing Position: 19th
Length of Tenure: Seven months
The Cottagers' third manager of the campaign - which is another signpost to impending relegation - turned a turbulent situation toxic. The German taskmaster didn't last long in the Championship either, being sacked after seven games.
PAOLO DI CANIO (Sunderland)
Season: 2012/13
Relegated: No
Record: P7 W2 D2 L3
Starting Position: 16th
Finishing Position: 17th
Length of Tenure: Six months
The Italian swiftly pulled off two brilliant results - a 3-0 derby success at Newcastle and 1-0 victory over bogey club Everton - but didn't win another league match in nine tries across 2012/13 and 2013/14.
NIGEL ADKINS (Reading)
Season: 2012/13
Relegated: Yes
Record: P8 W1 D2 L5
Starting Position: 19th
Finishing Position: 19th
Length of Tenure: One year and nine months
Itching to return to work after his harsh dismissal by Southampton two months earlier, Adkins seized the fiendish task of trying to rescue Reading from seven points adrift with eight games to play. He likely wishes he didn't bother.
TERRY CONNOR (Wolves)
Season: 2011/12
Relegated: Yes
Record: P13 W0 D4 L9
Starting Position: 18th
Finishing Position: 20th
Length of Tenure: Three months
Wolves rashly axed Mick McCarthy after a derby humiliation, quickly realised that nobody wanted the job and were forced to promote his assistant. No more Premier League wins followed, but a double relegation did.
ROY HODGSON (West Brom)
Season: 2010/11
Relegated: No
Record: P13 W5 D6 L2
Starting Position: 17th
Finishing Position: 11th
Length of Tenure: One year and three months
This was arguably the most inspired dugout tweak in Premier League history. Everyone was shocked that promotion-winning boss Roberto Di Matteo was ditched, yet Jeremy Peace couldn't resist Roy Hodgson, freshly discarded by Liverpool, and the Baggies flew up the table.
IAIN DOWIE (Hull)
Season: 2009/10
Relegated: Yes
Record: P9 W1 D3 L5
Starting Position: 19th
Finishing Position: 19th
Length of Tenure: Two months
Hull were so keen to sever ties with the man who led them up, Phil Brown, that they didn't seem to care about a contingency. In came Dowie, who had contributed to three Premier League demotions in the five prior seasons, to "achieve" his fourth.
IN SUMMARY
Five of the seven latecomers were relegated, five failed to improve their club's league position, four earned one league win or less in their debut season and five had left within nine months of their appointment. None lasted longer than 15 months. Most damningly, six haven't managed again since. Tim Sherwood, the 1.392/5 favourite for the QPR job, should think very carefully before saying yes.
