Champions League on Betfair: 59/1 Matic seals win for Chelsea but City held by Roma

Jose Mourinho had to watch as his side missed many chances

Mike Norman rounds up tonight's betting highlights involving the two English clubs in action in the Champions League...

Chelsea recorded their first Champions League win of the season with a 0-1 victory over Sporting Lisbon in the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday night.

The Blues looked in total control in the first half and squandered some great opportunities to open the scoring, not least when Diego Costa was clean through on goal in just the third minute of the game only to see his shot excellently saved by Rui Patricio.

In fact the Sporting goalkeeper was easily the home side's best player as he made some vital saves and interceptions to deny the Chelsea players before Jose Mourinho's men did eventually make the breakthrough.

And the goal came from an unlikely source; former Benfica man Nemanja Matic finding oceans of space at the back post to head home Cesc Fabregas' free-kick.

Matic was matched at 60.059/1 in the First Goalscorer market.

The second half was played at a frantic pace but was much more balanced with Sporting finally threatening the Chelsea defence, while at the other end the away side looked very dangerous on the break.

But despite Lisbon enjoying more of the ball they failed to create a clear cut chance of note and Mourinho's men saw the game out. A Chelsea win was matched at 1.981/1 In-Play with the 0-1 Correct Score hitting a high of just 8.27/1.

In tonight's other game Manchester City have seemingly left themselves with a mountain to climb after drawing 1-1 at home to in-form Italian side Roma.

Sergio Aguero - matched at 7.06/1 to score first - converted an early penalty but Francesco Totti levelled matters up midway through the first half and in doing so became the oldest goalscorer in European competition history.

The 1-1 Correct Score was matched at 17.016/1.

The result means Manuel Pellegrini's men already trail Bayern Munich by five points and Roma by three with a trip to Italy and a home game against the German giants still to come. You sense that the Citizen's must take maximum point from their next Champions League games - home and away to CSKA Moscow.

Man City can be backed at 21.020/1 to go on to lift the trophy, Chelsea are much more fancied at 7.413/2. Real Madrid remain the favourites at 5.14/1, marginally ahead of Bayern, 5.24/1, and Barcelona, 7.26/1.
