Huge Lloris could do very little about Sergio Aguero
If you had Sergio Aguero in your fantasy team over the weekend then you were probably rather happy.
Sergio Aguero scored all four goals as Manchester City swept to an enthralling 4-1 victory at home to Tottenham Hotspur.
It was an action-packed Saturday lunchtime at the Etihad Stadium. City went ahead through the Argentine superstar on 12 minutes when the striker appeared to be going nowhere in a crowded penalty area, before cutting inside and firing a low shot that flew into the bottom corner.
However, City were not ahead for long as Spurs were level less than two minutes later. City's Fernando was robbed of the ball in midfield and that sparked Spurs into life. Roberto Soldado, who was a shock starter for the visitors, played in Christian Eriksen and he smashed the ball past Joe Hart.
The first of four penalties given by referee Jon Moss came on 18 minutes and Spurs will likely feel aggrieved about it. Frank Lampard appeared to be tripped by Erik Lamela inside the box, but it was a soft decision. Aguero stepped up to send Hugo Lloris the wrong way and smashed it into the corner.
Aguero almost had a hat-trick minutes later but he fired straight at Lloris before he had an even better opportunity when the referee pointed to the spot again. This time it looked a correct decision as Younes Kaboul brought down David Silva, but Aguero opted to go down the centre of the goal and Lloris kept it out before the striker put the rebound over the bar.
City had heroes at both ends of the pitch as Hart was in inspired form to deny Spurs on a number of occasions. After Aguero and Jesus Navas had been thwarted by Lloris after the break, Spurs had a penalty of their own after Martin Demichelis was adjudged to have clipped Soldado from behind near the edge of the box.
The Spanish striker dusted himself off and took the penalty, but Hart made an inspired save down to his low to maintain City's lead in the game. The England keeper made another fantastic stop to deny Soldado moments later as City were thankful for his last-ditch interventions.
Incredibly there was a fourth penalty awarded by the referee and, yet again, Spurs will not be happy about it. Aguero was pulled back by Federico Fazio as he tried to get on to a Silva cross and Moss pointed straight to the spot.
To further rub salt in Spurs' wounds, he showed a red card to Fazio on his Premier League debut. It looked a harsh decision, but Aguero showed no mercy as he lashed the ball past Lloris to secure his hat-trick.
It got even better for Aguero on 75 minutes when he got his fourth. He was played into the box and cut inside before curling a delightful shot into the far corner. It was damage limitation for Spurs in the final 10 minutes as City flooded forward with ease. James Milner can count himself unlucky not to have got on the score sheet after his low curled effort struck the post.
Aguero's clinical finishing was the difference between the two teams but fans cannot underestimate the importance of Hart's penalty save to prevent Soldado from bringing the scores level at 2-2.
City keep up the pressure on leaders Chelsea after this confidence-boosting win, while Spurs and Mauricio Pochettino will have to dust themselves off after this battering and bounce back as soon as possible.
