Ronald Koeman's Southampton side were fantastic today
It was a hugely eventful weekend in the Premier League, packed with goals, penalties and red cards. Luke Moore rounds up the action...
Sergio Aguero nabbed four goals and extended his record against Tottenham Hotspur to an incredible nine strikes in six games in Saturday's lunchtime kickoff as Manchester City posted a convincing win against the north Londoners.
Spurs had much of the early play and started brightly, but their defence was unable to deal with the movement, pace and trickery of Aguero and co and the diminutive Argentine actually could have had five goals personally were it not for a nice penalty save from Hugo Lloris. Spurs themselves had a penalty chance to make it 2-2 but Joe Hart managed to save Roberto Soldado's spot-kick and from there City moved into another gear and out of sight. Aguero was matched as high as 27.026/1 to score a hat-trick, City were matched at 1.558/15 to secure the win and the Citizens are now a reasonable-looking 3.7511/4 to successfully defend their title.
In the other standout result of the day, Southampton recorded a scarcely believable 8-0 win over a hapless Sunderland at St Mary's. The Saints, who are having a brilliant season so far, put the Mackems to the sword with extreme prejudice and ran out comfortable winners. The score was so severe that it wasn't matched on the exchange, but Southampton are now just 3.1511/5 for a top six finish this year. Sunderland's afternoon started off in comedy fashion with a ridiculous own goal from Santiago Vergini and things rapidly went downhill from there. Manager Gus Poyet apologised to the fans for the result, but that will be scant consolation to Sunderland diehards as they make the long trip back from the south coast.
Elsewhere, Chelsea made hard work of a 1-2 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Cesar Azpilicueta for the visitors and Damien Delaney for Palace both received their marching orders which made for an open game, and despite Fraizer Campbell pulling one back late on for the home team, Chelsea were able to see the game out thanks to goals from Cesc Fabregas and Oscar. Palace now find themselves 2.588/5 third-favourites for the drop.
In the afternoon's other games, Everton returned to winning ways with a 1.664/6 home win over Aston Villa, Arsenal were held 2-2 at home to Hull in a result matched at 11.5n/a and an impressive West Ham piled further misery on Burnley with a 1-3 reversal at Turf Moor. Sean Dyche's men are a nailed-on 1.330/100 for relegation now, according to the market.
In the standout result on Sunday, Liverpool overcame a spirited QPR side 2-3 at Loftus Road in a dramatic game which saw four goals scored in the final eight minutes. The 2-3 scoreline was matched at the maximum 1000.0n/a on the Exchange and a Liverpool win reached 440.0439/1 in what was a game that will live long in the memory. QPR are still second-favourites for relegation at 1.75/7, but will be encouraged by the performance they put in against their more illustrious hosts.
