Totti grabs historic goal as Roma draw at the Etihad

Totti is now the oldest scorer in Champions League history

Two great strikers hit the back of the net but one goal each led to only a point apiece for Manchester City and AS Roma on Tuesday night.

Manchester City remain winless in the Champions League after being held at home by Group E rivals Roma.

A Sergio Aguero penalty gave City a flying start but Roma talisman Francesco Totti equalised later in the first half to earn the visitors what could prove to be a crucial point.

Manuel Pellegrini recalled Joe Hart in goal after missing Saturday's Premier League win at Hull City while Eliaquim Mangala dropped to the bench in favour of Martin Demichelis after a poor performance at the KC Stadium.

Jesus Navas also started for the home side ahead of James Milner as Pellegrini named an attacking lineup at the Etihad Stadium.

It was an attacking start to the match from Manchester City too as Aguero fired them ahead from the penalty spot within four minutes.

After ex-City defender Maicon pulled Aguero to ground, the City striker buried the spot-kick in the bottom corner, sending goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski the wrong way.

The goal was Aguero's 10th in the Champions League for City but he was unable to add to his tally as Roma responded well.

Less than three minutes after conceding the penalty Maicon almost made amends as he rattled a powerful shot off the crossbar from a narrow angle.

The moment was a warning sign and unsettled the City defenders, who struggled to cope with the movement of former Arsenal winger Gervinho.

It didn't take much longer for the visitors' pressure to pay off. Radja Nainggolan opened up City's defence with a through ball for Totti and the Roma legend, who turned 38 earlier this week, showed stunning composure to chip Hart, breaking Ryan Giggs' record as the oldest goalscorer in European club competition history.

Roma looked far more comfortable for the rest of the first half but City thought they should have been awarded another penalty when a Navas cross went behind for a corner off Kostas Manolas's arm.

Pellegrini, clearly unhappy with the way the first half went, replaced Navas with Milner at half time and the England midfielder's energy was a welcome addition.

But it was Roma who came closest to snatching a winner. After Alessandro Florenzi failed to convert Totti's cross a chance fell to Miralem Pjanic who was denied from six yards out by a superb reaction save from Hart.

Pjanic went close again moments later when his 30-yard strike whistled past the post and bounced back off the stanchion.

City grew into the second half and were boosted by the introduction of in-form substitute Frank Lampard.

Two chances fell in the way of the former Chelsea midfielder but he was unable to add to his tally of four goals in three games.

Lampard's first effort deflected off former Chelsea team-mate and forced a fine save out of Skorupski before he sliced wide from 18 yards after good work from David Silva.

Pjanic went close again for Roma before Rudi Garcia decided to settle for a point, signalled by a defensive substitution when he replaced Florenzi with left-back Jose Holebas.

City tried to take the game to Roma in the closing stages but Pellegrini's men were unable to find a breakthrough.

David Silva went closest after a wonderful move but he could only find the side netting from Pablo Zabaleta's cross.

As desperation crept in Stevan Jovetic fired two long-range efforts over the crossbar and never looked like scoring on his Champions League debut for City.

The draw leaves Manchester City without a win in Group E with Bayern Munich already five points clear of the Premier League champions after two games.

City are also three points behind Roma, who thrashed CSKCA Moscow 5-1 a fortnight ago, and the Citizens will surely need to win in the reverse fixture at Stadio Olimpico if they are to qualify for the knockout stages.
