The best and worst signings in the EPL so far

Fabregas and Costa have both been as great as advertised

You don't have to be a football expert to think that Costa and Febregas have been excellent buys but what about some of the other big money movies of the summer?

So which summer signings have worked so far and who has been struggling at the start?

Let's begin with Chelsea and Diego Costa. 32million was spent on the maverick striker. Two years ago, Costa could barely get in the Atletico Madrid side and was sent out on loan to Rayo Vallecano, but now he is banging in goals for fun. The Brazilian striker has eight goals in six league games already and he looks like he could grab a whole lot more as the season progresses.

The same cannot be said for Rickie Lambert, whose signing from Southampton was seen as a good move from Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers over the summer. Lambert was expected to strengthen the partnership of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez with a Champions League campaign coming up. Suarez was then sold and Loic Remy failed a medical, so Liverpool signed Mario Balotelli instead. Lambert has consequently barely featured so far this campaign.

A player who has slotted into Premier League life with no problem at all is another Chelsea player, Cesc Fabregas. The former Barcelona man has played in the Premier League before with Arsenal and has been performing for Chelsea like he has never been away. With Barcelona rebuilding and Arsenal not taking up the option of re-signing the 27-year-old, Chelsea stepped in. His performance in the destruction of Burnley in the first half of the opening game of the season was one of the reasons why it has been a shrewd move for the Blues and Jose Mourinho.

Arsenal's signing of Alexis Sanchez was a real coup. The Chilean had a very good World Cup and always performed well for Barcelona. As with Fabregas, Sanchez's Barcelona career ended with the clear-out at the Camp Nou. Arsenal fought off the attention of Liverpool and other clubs to secure the signature of the 25-year-old, and he has started the season pretty strongly.

When Chelsea sold Ashley Cole, they required a left-back. The question being asked was whether Jose Mourinho was about to promote Ryan Bertrand to the starting XI to feature on a more regular basis. The answer was an unequivocal no. Bertrand went off on loan again, this time to Southampton, and Mourinho signed Brazilian left-back Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid. The 29-year-old was expected to slot into the full-back role and make it his own. However, he has only made a small number of appearances thanks to Mourinho again picking a right-back to fill in where Luis should be. Cesar Azpilicueta has been the preferred choice, as he was towards the end of last season.

To add Liverpool's Emre Can to the list of worst signings after six games is perhaps a little cruel, but the 9.75million signing from Bayer Leverkusen has only made two substitute appearances. The 20-year-old has since suffered an ankle injury whilst on international duty for Germany's Under-21 side and this will keep him on the sidelines for six weeks. Can was criticised by the Bayer Leverkusen hierarchy for moving too soon to the Premier League - they thought his game would be more suited to the Bundesliga. Liverpool certainly have yet to see the best of him so maybe they were right.

Another player who is currently on the injured list and who is considered to be a poor purchase is Siem de Jong for Newcastle United. Bought in the summer transfer market, the Dutch international signed a six-year deal with the North-East club. De Jong was named vice-captain by Alan Pardew, but to date has made only two appearances for the Toon Army. De Jong injured his thigh in training with the Magpies and is expected to be out for a number of months.
