Football Bet of the Day: Another loss for Selfoss is on the cards

The sweet taste of success

Fresh from a chunky winner in Argentina, Kevin Hatchard has a spring in his step as he whisks us to Iceland for an intriguing second-tier clash...

So in the end, Quilmes drew 2-2 with Godoy Cruz to net us a 2.6813/8 winner on the Over 2.5 Goals market, our biggest profit since the column began. It was tense for a while - Quilmes were 2-0 up in 56 minutes, but that precious third goal didn't arrive until the 87th minute. Godoy Cruz scored a second after that, but I was tucking into a celebratory chocolate clair by then, oblivious to the visitors' stirring comeback.

Where to now, I hear you cry? A long journey I'm afraid, because we're off to Iceland, and a second-tier clash between Selfoss and the leaders Leiknir Reykjavik. The town of Selfoss has a population of just 6,500, but they must all play sport, because there is a dizzying array of pursuits available. Not only does the Urmennafelag Club have a football team, but they also have representatives in handball, athletics, gymnastics, judo, weightlifting, swimming, taekwondo and motocross. Phew!

Sadly for our friends at UMF Selfoss, the football hasn't been going too well this season. The Selfyssingar (catchy nickname) are eighth in the ten-team division after 16 matches, just four points above the dropzone. They have been particularly struggling at their Selfossvollur ground, losing six of their nine matches, including a 6-0 demolition just two weeks ago at the hands of third-placed HK.

No such problems for table-topping Leiknir Reykjavik. They are nine points clear at the summit, having won 12 of their 16 matches and lost just one. Their recent form is excellent - the "Pride of Breidholt" have won eight of their last nine matches, and have taken maximum points in four of their last five away games. 19-year-old midfielder Sindri Bjornsson is the star of the show - he has banged in 12 goals in just 15 games, a remarkable improvement when you consider he didn't score at all last season.

Backing odds-on shots on the road is often the route to the poorhouse, but on this occasion I'll make an exception. Leiknir are way too good to be a 1.75/7 to win this game, especially given the pitiful home form of the hosts. Now, where did I put the rest of those clairs?

Recommended Bet
Back Leiknir Reykjavik to win at 1.75/7
