More celebrating for Bayern Munich this season?
Bayern Munich look good, they look real good. Alex Johnson looks at whether anyone can stop them from dominating the Bundesliga in the 2014/2015 season.
Having won the domestic double last season, Bayern Munich has re-invested in the squad to challenge on all fronts this season.
Stopping them would take a gargantuan effort, or would it?
Borussia Dortmund have just won the German Super Cup in convincing fashion over the champions and will be the Bavarian club's closest challengers you feel.
Bayern have strengthened in all departments, including signing Dortmund's leading goalscorer over the past four years in Robert Lewandowski and in turn they have been able to release Mario Mandzukic to Atletico Madrid. However Bayern will feel the loss of Spaniard Javi Martinez who is likely to be out of action into the New Year with a knee injury.
The Munich giants just keep chipping away at Dortmund's squad, last season it was Mario Gotze, this time it's the giant Polish striker Lewandowski. Bayern's pursuit to sign him has taken longer than one year but eventually they have their man.
Dortmund have recruited well despite the loss of their top striker, investing in last year's leading Serie A goalscorer, Ciro Immobile from Torino and Adrian Ramos from fellow Bundesliga club, Hertha Berlin. Young centre-half Matthias Ginter from Freiburg will add some steel at the back, the 20-year-old is a star for the future having won two German national caps already.
Dortmund's Rhur valley rivals Schalke could be an outsider for the Bundesliga title. The club from Gelsenkirchen will need huge slices of luck to challenge the dominant two though. They fully deserved their third placing last season having had a real strong second half of the year and the squad has a youthful touch to it, with the impressive Julian Draxler key to the side's success. Challenging on both the domestic and European fronts may prove costly though for Jens Keller's men.
The Royal Blues have strength though, with experienced Ghanaian play-maker, Kevin-Prince Boateng, plus the Dutch striker, Klaas Jan-Huntelaar. These players will need to be firing on all cylinders to even contemplate a threat to Bayern and Dortmund.
The only other side to challenge Bayern could be Bayer Leverkusen. New boss Roger Schmidt was brought in this summer from Salzburg and has promised an attacking threat to all sides in the forthcoming season. Losing Emre Can to Liverpool has only hindered them, although Bayer made a shrewd acquisition in Hakan Calhanoglu from Hamburg.
Strength up-front has been Bayer Leverkusen's key weapon in recent years, but do they have enough firepower? With Stefan Kiessling expected to be amongst the goals again, they just can't seem to make the leap to title contenders.
Bayern may be a victim of their own success though, with an attempt on all fronts to challenge for supremacy, burn out in their own players may be a key factor. They had 11 players in Germany's successful triumph in Brazil and history suggests that Bayern have failed to win the Bundesliga following a winning World Cup in 1974 and 1990.
The Bavarian club have had a pretty shambolic pre-season, with nine of their players rested following the World Cup. The B Team they sent then lost to an MLS all-stars team in Portland, USA.
Dortmund's coach, Jurgen Klopp, will now be expecting his side to kick on and attempt to win back the title.
His side's pressing game works wonders in contrast to Bayern's passing style. Schalke have adopted the same philosophy as Klopp's Dortmund, so it will be an intriguing battle between the two sides during the season.
Can anyone challenge Bayern Munich? Yes, but they will need a huge slice of luck.
