Rojo in, Nani out. How will this effect Manchester United?

Nani won't be wearing this strip again this season

One of the most overrated players in the Premier League has left Old Trafford on loan but how does the Marcos Rojo-Nani deal help Manchester United going forward? Alex Johnson investigates.

Louis van Gaal has wasted little time as he bids to strengthen his Manchester United squad on the back of their defeat to Swansea.

Argentina defender Marcos Rojo will join from Sporting Lisbon for a reported 16m fee subject to completing a medical and agreeing personal terms.

Portuguese international Nani is going in the opposite direction, returning to his former club on a season-long loan seven years after arriving at Old Trafford.

The United boss has been targeting a centre-back this summer, after experienced duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand departed the club at the end of last season. With Patrice Evra also leaving for Juventus and new recruit Luke Shaw currently out injured, Rojo's ability to play at left full-back will come as a welcome relief.

After making six appearances during Argentina's journey to the World Cup final in Brazil, the 24-year-old fits the bill perfectly for Van Gaal.

United were forced to give a debut to academy player Tyler Blackett on the left of Van Gaal's favoured three-man defence in Saturday's Premier League curtain raiser.

With 21-year-old Jesse Lingard also earning a first start at wing-back, the need for reinforcements was stark in the wake of Swansea's shock success.

Rojo will bring much needed experience and can fit in as part of a back-three or in a conventional four.

In 28 appearances for Sporting last season, he contributed five goals. He also netted the winner for Argentina in their 3-2 win over Nigeria at this summer's World Cup.

The player was clearly determined to make the switch to Manchester, declaring it "a dream" last week as he agitated for a move away from Lisbon.

The departure of Nani meanwhile, will not come as a major blow to the United faithful.

It was hoped the winger would be capable of filling some of the gap left by Cristiano Ronaldo's 2009 move to Real Madrid. In truth, his failure to deliver consistent performances has seen him become a figure of frustration at Old Trafford.

Last season he made just 11 appearances and despite coming off the bench against Swansea last weekend, his departure will not come as a surprise to many observers.

These latest moves could be the beginning of a hectic final week of the transfer window for United, after Van Gaal had his eyes opened in his first competitive outing last Saturday.
