Manchester United are hoping to complete a shock move for Real Madrid veteran Xabi Alonso according to the Metro.

United have been on the lookout for a quality defensive midfielder for most of the summer and Louis van Gaal is now hoping to do a deal for the former Liverpool man before the end of the transfer window.

Arsenal are also looking to add steel to their midfield, with Newcastle's Cheick Tiote a rumoured target according to the Daily Star, although Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow are also interested in the Newcastle man.

Staying with the Gunners and Talksport are reporting that they are eyeing a double swoop for Paris Saint-Germain duo Adrien Rabiot and Clement Chantome although the French outfit are thought to be unwilling to let both players leave for less than their asking prices.

AC Milan's Mario Balotelli could be on his way back to the Premier League with Liverpool eyeing a possible deal for the striker according to the Times.

The fiery frontman previously played for Manchester City but has struggled since joining the Rossoneri in early 2013 and now could be on his way to Anfield as Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his frontline.

To another of the top four contenders and the Daily Mirror say Tottenham are edging closer to a possible move for PSV Eindhoven's Memphis Depay after the winger rejected the possibility of a contract extension.

Moving down the Premier League and West Brom are in talks to sign free agent Georgios Samaras according to the Birmingham Mail, with the Greek forward still looking for a club after leaving Celtic earlier this summer.

Another striker who could be on the move is Blackburn Rovers' Jordan Rhodes who the Daily Mail say is attracting interest from Hull City as they look to add to their attacking options following the long-term injury to Robert Snodgrass.

Looking abroad and Franz Beckenbauer has recommended Real Madrid's Sami Khedira to Bayern Munich, saying the midfielder would be the ideal man to add steel to Pep Guardiola's attacking line-up according to Bild.

The Daily Mail say Roma defender Mehdi Benatia is set to join either Manchester United or Chelsea, with Manchester City's Matija Nastasic being suggested as a possible replacement.

Finally and Marca are reporting that Valencia are still looking to add to their squad this summer, with another Manchester City player, Alvaro Negredo, top of their list as they hunt for a new striker.
