Can Giorgi pull off a Montreal upset?
The action continues in Montreal on Tuesday, and Abelson Info take a closer look at a schedule packed with a mixture of both first and second round clashes...
Things start to get a little more interesting at the Coupe Rogers 2014 from Tuesday onwards as the top seeds enter the fray after being handed a bye in the opening round.
Amongst those in action is home favourite Eugenie Bouchard, and the young Canadian is well placed to make short work of Shelby Rogers as she looks to avoid an early exit in order to keep the home faithful happy.
Elsewhere, Victoria Azarenka also makes her bow in the tournament with a tricky opening clash against Alize Cornet.
While the Belarusian is expected to prevail, she is still lacking match practice after months of inactivity and as a result her fiery French opponent could prove to be difficult if she is not on her game.
Nevertheless, there is still much to be decided in the first round, and that is where the value lies on Tuesday, starting with Caroline Garcia facing Karin Knapp.
Admittedly, things have gone downhill for the young French ace since her tournament win in Bogota back in April, and despite a brief revival at Wimbledon, she has been disappointing in recent months.
In addition, she has lost both her previous meetings with Knapp, both coming this year with one also on this surface, and as a result, the Italian rightfully starts as the favourite.
However, at just 20 years of age, Garcia hasn't made it into the top 50 by accident, and with her raw talent she is capable of producing a solid performance against the best. Therefore, she may well be worth an investment to produce a shock of sort as she looks for a confidence boost ahead of the US Open.
Meanwhile, another emerging talent that is also capable of pulling off an upset is Camila Giorgi. The 22-year-old Italian ace is progressively working her way up through the world rankings after some stand-out performances last year, and she is now ranked at world number 38.
She will have her hands full against Andrea Petkovic who is seemingly over her previous injury woes and is back playing consistent tennis, but their head-to-head record suggests something could be brewing.
The pair have met twice already this year, both occasions on hard courts, and Giorgi has won both. While the more recent meeting was a three-set war, the young Italian will take great confidence from that and she will feel she has the edge against Petkovic ahead of this encounter despite her opponent having a very impressive year to date.
