Against All Odds: Liverpool to triumph in the USA

Will Lucas be the key to a tighter defence?

There's a pre-season treat in America tonight as Liverpool take on Man United in the International Champions Cup and Paul Robinson thinks it will be the Scousers who claim the trophy.

The end of season despair that befell Liverpool back in May will hopefully have subsided now and they can reflect on a successful campaign that exceeded expectations. While this is only a relatively meaningless pre-season tournament, The Reds will be keen to lift the trophy, especially as the final pits them against their bitterest of rivals.

Brendan Rodgers' side beat Olympiakos 1-0 and Milan 2-0, with a penalty shoot-out victory over Man City sandwiched in-between. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect for them is the fact that they kept two clean sheets - something which they struggled with last term.

Manchester United are undergoing their own transformation under Louis van Gaal and that has led them to the final of this tournament. Victories over Roma, Inter and Real Madrid - albeit the Inter one being on penalties - has set them up nicely for the new season, and while they'll be keen to win, it won't be the end of the world if they don't.

A switch to three at the back has proved effective and the main difference between this year and last is that the players are playing in their preferred positions. That applies mostly to Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney and their inter-play - as well as Ashley Young's exploits at left wing back - has been the highlight of their trip to the States.

This game is quite a close one to call so with Man United trading as the overwhelming favourites to lift the cup, at around the 1.618/13 mark, I have to make them my lay of the day.
