David Moyes accepts Real challenge in Spain

David Moyes is back in football

David Moyes is back in management after the Scot was confirmed as the new boss of La Liga side Real Sociedad.

Moyes has been out of work since leaving Manchester United in April less than a year after taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sociedad announced they had secured the 51-year-old former Everton boss late on Monday evening and he will take control of a team currently 15th in the table after winning only two of their 11 games to date.

On the flip side, those victories came against European champions Real Madrid and La Liga winners Atletico Madrid so Moyes certainly has the raw materials to work with in San Sebastian.

Moyes had recently claimed in a television interview that there are not enough British managers working abroad and he is looking to put that right after stating he wanted to get back into the game.

There were words of warning for the Scot from former England manager Steve McClaren, who managed in both Germany and Holland after his time with the Three Lions.

The Derby manager said his experiences on the continent were "daunting" and "frightening", but added that they helped him become a better coach.

McClaren warned Moyes that it will take time to adapt to his new surroundings.

"My head was spinning and I felt nothing was going to work," he said. "After six months, you start to adapt and buy into their culture and get to know the league you're in."

There will inevitably be comparison between Moyes' time at Everton and the club he now finds himself in charge of.

Like the Toffees, Sociedad are known for developing young players as they cannot match the spending power of Spain's household names.

Moyes' immediate target will be to steer the club away from the lower reaches of the table but in the long term he will be expected to try and emulate last season's jaunt into the Champions League.

Moyes has no doubt considered the talented young squad he will inherit with former Arsenal youngster Carlos Vela, former Real Madrid man Sergio Canales and youth team product Ruben Pardo among those to look out for.

Perhaps worryingly for Moyes, Real Sociedad have had no fewer than 16 managers since the turn of the century.

The club's President Jokin Aperribay has also warned his new manager that there will be no bounty waiting when the January window opens.

Another former Everton boss with experience of La Liga management is confident Moyes can make a success of his move to Spain.

Howard Kendall managed Athletic Bilbao in the 1980s and insists Moyes is exactly the type of manager to succeed at Sociedad.

"Real Sociedad are not looking to win the league, they are looking to survive and then improve," Kendall. "That is what David did at Everton.

"If he can stabilise the club, as he did at Everton, then I think he'll enjoy it."

With the international break now started, Moyes has some time to find his feet before his first game in charge, a trip to Deportivo on November 22.

Elche, Villarreal and a Cope del Rey game against Oviedo will be next on the agenda before a Basque derby against rivals Athletic Bilbao on December 14.

The New Year begins with the visit of Barcelona to San Sebastian on January 4.

Moyes will be hoping to have less scrutiny on his every move after a nightmare spell at Old Trafford.
