Timeform SmartPlays: Friday August 24

We've got three more fancies at York today

Bated Breath should take all the beating in the Nunthorpe, but with uncertainty over the weather, our SmartPlays come from elsewhere on the York card...

In the first race, at 14:00, the least exposed of the runners, Silver Lime, looks the pick. Stepping up from 11 furlongs shouldn't be a problem for this colt who just got up to beat Assizes on the line at Goodwood last time after a 10-week break, and the furlong further on this galloping track can only help him today. Although up 8 lb for that run, Silver Lime is sure to improve, having only his fifth outing, and could prove better than a handicapper in time. Dropped in on his previous runs, the wide draw shouldn't be an issue for Silver Lime and his winning experience on slower ground might come in use, with the possibility of more showers today.

The Strensall Stakes (15:05) looks a tricky affair, but Tazahum showed enough last time out, winning in listed company, to suggest he has hit a patch of form at just the right moment. He ran to similar form in a Listed race last year, in the run up to his career-best second in this race behind Green Destiny and can go one better at an enticing price. Current favourite Stipulate is taking on older horses for the first time, in a race that juveniles have struggled in, and if Tazahum runs to his best, the three-year-old shouldn't get close. Sir Michael Stoute is yet to get off the mark at the Ebor meeting this year, but with the yard still in good form, he shouldn't have to wait long, and Tazahum looks the chance of the day.

The 16:15 at York looks set for Wentworth to record his first win, after finishing two and a half lengths sixth to Steeler in a Glorious Goodwood maiden on debut. Richard Hughes didn't knock the colt about after he showed a fair amount of greenness when outpaced two furlongs out and then hampered as he began to pick up. That form looks strong, particularly given Steeler's gutsy runner-up performance in the Acomb to Dundonnell, and two maiden wins since for stablemates Colmar Kid and The Gatling Boy. Although among fellow Group entrants, Wentworth certainly looked the part last time, and is entitled to have come on for that run to score here for the Richard Hannon stable.
