There's no racecourse quite like Epsom
It's a busy bank holiday of racing, and you have to feel so sorry for Cartmel on missing out on one of its two major pay days. Racing goes ahead elsewhere however, and it is the cards at Ripon and Epsom that have caught Neil Munro's eye.
There's a decent mile handicap at Ripon (15:35) featuring plenty of horses who like to get on with it, even if the field lacks a dominant front runner. This could set the race up for one of those tracking the pace and with Tim Easterby's horses still running well I like the look of Mirrored. The six-year-old son of Dansili has won over the course and distance and has won five times on good ground. Mirrored is currently trading at 6.411/2 on the Betfair markets and on reflection this looks a fair price.
I am never one to shy away from a tough looking sprint handicap and the 15:05 at Epsom fits that bill. From a pace perspective it's a fascinating race, as all the out and out speed is drawn low. But with only 12 in the field this shouldn't prove a problem for them.
Indeed you must all remember that Stone Of Folca notched that record time in the 'Dash' early in the summer from a low draw so it will be interesting to see if a return to Epsom can bring about a return to form for John Best's four-year-old. With all the pace drawn low I would expect one of the 'trackers' drawn high to run well. Into this bracket falls Fathom Five but his two course and distance wins have come in April.
The one that caught my eye is Peter Crate's Sandfrankskipgo, a strong travelling type who will enjoy following the speedballs. Peter has done fantastically well with Taajub and I hope he can pick up another decent sprint handicap prize. He is currently trading at 9.08/1 on the Betfair markets.
