Timeform put forward a selection of SmartPlays at Goodwood and Beverley on Sunday...
We get underway in the Group 3 Supreme Stakes at Goodwood where The Cheka is taken to land his second win of 2012. The six-year-old has taken his form to a new level this year since being dropped to sprint distances, but it should not be forgotten that he is smart over today's seven furlongs, as evidenced by last season's win in the Group 3 Timeform Jury Stakes (registered as the John of Gaunt Stakes) at Haydock. Timeform Notebook entrant Zumbi has to be respected, that one still unexposed and progressing, but The Cheka sets the standard and can get us off to the best of starts.
Time to head north and take in the delights of Beverley for our final two SmartPlays, starting with Party Line in the 16:05. A winner over C&D in May, the three-year-old has run consistently well since, bar one slight blip, and his latest start, when third at Newcastle, represented his best run yet. Party Line made his effort earlier than ideal that day, only being headed in the final half-furlong when he had no more to give. A return to today's trip is a plus and he is a leading contender in what is, admittedly, a fairly trappy event.
The following race at Beverley is unlikely to take much winning, and current Timeform horse in Focus Penang Pegasus is a confident selection to follow up his win at Ayr 12 days ago. That effort was an improved one, the three-year-old looking as if he is just starting to get the hang of things as he travelled well and won readily, and he is likely to keep progressing as he becomes more polished. A 3 lb rise for that win looks more than fair, and although he is a fairly restrictive price, he looks sure to go well.
