Mens US Open: Selections for every match played on Wednesday

A straightforward task should await Andy Murray today

The first round continues in the Men's singles though there is one very important second round match to be played. The guys at Abelson Info preview the action...

Kevin Anderson v David Ferrer (4) 16:00 Louis Armstrong Stadium

H-to-H 0-0

Anderson is always dangerous as he is a big server who can get on a bit of a roll. His problem is on the other side of the net where he will see one of the better returners of serve and pretty much a solid wall. When it comes to a rally of any length Ferrer will almost certainly win the vast majority so Anderson will need to make this a crash bang wallop type of affair.

Selection: Ferrer

Janko Tipsarevic (8) v Guillaume Rufin 16:00 Grandstand

H-to-H 0-0

Rufin is predominantly a clay court player on the lower circuits so this is one heck of a step up. I wouldn't go huge for Tipsarevic as he retired from his last match but all being well this should be easy for him.

Selection: Tipsarevic

Cedrik-Marcel Stebe v Viktor Troicki (29) 16:00 Court 6

H-to-H 0-0

Troicki is not in bad touch and consistently plays to his ranking. He really needs to step it up if he wants to go deep in any of these big events. He shouldn't have much trouble with Stebe however as the German hasn't got the tools for this test.

Selection: Troicki

Mikhail Youzhny (28) v Gilles Muller 16:00 Court 7

H-to-H 2-0

An intriguing clash in store here between two of the tours older players. Youzhny can be pretty hit or miss but when he is hit he is a real player. Muller doesn't have quite the same weapons but if Youzhny is not on his game then he is more than capable of dispatching him.

Selection: Youzhny

Igor Sijsling v Daniel Gimeno-Traver 16:00 Court 10

H-to-H 0-0

Sijsling has been doing some good work on the hard courts of the challenger tour recently so will be pretty confident coming to New York. In contrast Gimeno-Traver has been on the clay courts on the challenger tour - equally as productive but simply not getting the preparation he needs for an event like this.

Selection: Sijsling

Grega Zemlja v Ricardo Mello 16:00 Court 15

H-to-H 0-0

Mello really is past his best now and should enjoy moments like this whilst they last. It isn't that Zemlja is any great shakes but he has won back to back challenger tour titles and comes here in some form - and that should be enough.

Selection: Zemlja

Xavier Malisse v John Isner (9) 18:00 Arthur Ashe Stadium

H-to-H 2-1

Malisse has been a great character down the years and is often good to watch. Not in bad form he would have liked an easier draw than this. Isner has had an impressive year but has always struck me as someone who will just fall short. However, his win last week saw him beat Tsonga and Berdych on the way to the title.

Selection: Isner

Tobias Kamke v Lleyton Hewitt 18:00 Court 13

H-to-H 0-0

Kamke is ranked somewhat higher than the veteran Hewitt but that is of no concern here. I would be worried if this was some up and coming young player but Kamke has had enough chances to prove he is better than he has shown to be. Hewitt is actually in good shape at the moment and he will be in no mood to lose first round here.

Selection: Hewitt

Brian Baker v Jan Hajek 18:00 Court 11

H-to-H 0-0

Baker is on a mission and will get plenty of support from the New York crowd. Mix this with Hajek's fear of anything other than clay and you have yourself a clear cut winner.

Selection: Baker

Grigor Dimitrov v Benoit Paire 18:00 Court 8

H-to-H 0-0

Paire is ranked higher than Dimitrov but there is no doubt that the Russian will go off favourite for this match. Dimitrov has been mixing it with the big boys recently and has not let himself down. Paire is pretty consistent but hasn't really got the game for grand slams.

Selection: Dimitrov

Lukasz Kubot v Leonardo Mayer 18:00 Court 14

H-to-H 1-2

I like this match-up between two players looking to burst towards the worlds top 50. The three times they have met have all been close encounters and you can expect the same again. Kubot probably has fractionally better form coming in but not so much as to merit any big favouritism.

Selection: Mayer

Tommy Robredo v Andreas Seppi (26) 18:30 Court 7

H-to-H 2-2

It is great to see Tommy Robredo still giving it his best at this level but the simple fact is that his game doesn't carry much weight with the modern day opponents. Seppi is only a couple of years younger but he is still more than holding his own. The Italian is more than capable of wrapping this one up quickly.

Selection: Seppi

Mikhail Kukushkin v Jarkko Nieminen 20:30 Court 6

H-to-H 2-0

Kukushkin has won both of the times these two have met but I am not sure just how much relevance that will have here. Nieminen has been in something of a slump but is fighting back and will relish this match up.

Selection: Nieminen

Ernests Gulbis v Tommy Haas (21) 20:00 Court 17

H-to-H 0-1

Haas is in good form and often saves his best for the hard court season. You have to suspect he will turn up here and play some good stuff. Gulbis is a nightmare first round for Haas as this guy goes for everything. If it comes off then he can beat anyone but those days aren't as often as he would like. This promises to be a fantastic encounter. Don't miss it.

Selection: Haas

Steve Johnson v Rajeev Ram 20:00 Court 4

H-to-H 0-0

Johnson had his best run of the year in his last event so he couldn't be in better shape. In Ram he is taking on a big server who has never really managed to take his singles career forward. Most will find this a tight one to call.

Selection: Ram

Richard Gasquet (13) v Albert Montanes 20:30 Court 11

H-to-H 5-0

Gasquet leads their head to head five nil but they were all on clay - however you would say that Montanes is probably most effective on clay so that doesn't bode too well. Bottom line here is that Gasquet is in terrific form and Montanes cannot live with him.

Selection: Gasquet

Benjamin Becker v Ryan Harrison 22:30 Grandstand

H-to-H 0-1

There isn't a lot to choose between these two. Harrison got the better of their first meeting just a month ago and you would have to fancy he will go off favourite here. He is only 20 however and doesn't have huge amounts of experience at this level. With this being hard to call, it would be sensible to head to the value.

Selection: Becker

Jurgen Melzer v Bradley Klahn 22:30 Court 17

H-to-H 0-0

Klahn has done well to make it to this lofty stage and he could have got an easier obstacle to overcome. Melzer is a quality left hander who has been terrorising the men's division for years so the chances of Klahn being able to handle him are pretty slim.

Selection: Melzer

Philipp Kohlschreiber (19) v Michael Llodra 22:30 Court 13

H-to-H 0-0

Llodra has won a few titles in his time but nowadays he is nothing more than a fairly tricky left hander. Kohlschreiber is not a player to take lightly and he will be fully prepared for his attempt to go far in New York.

Selection: Kohlschreiber

Andy Murray (3) v Ivan Dodig 02:00 Arthur Ashe Stadium

H-to-H 0-0

Andy Murray has had the ideal early draw in this year's US Open with a potential second gentle workout against a lowly ranked player. Having disposed of Bogolomov in straight sets, Murray will do the same to Dodig.

Selection: Murray
