Petra Martic v Sam Stosur (7) 16:00 Arthur Ashe Stadium
H-to-H 0-1
Martic is no mug but she hasn't really progressed as many thought she would. More often than not she only plays well for a part of her matches. Stosur may not have had the best year of her life but she is still one of the top players and taking care of sporadic lower ranked players is easy for her.
Selection: Stosur
Marion Bartoli (11) v Jamie Hampton 16:00 Grandstand
H-to-H 0-0
They don't come any tougher than Bartoli - hence her lofty seeding of eleven here. She is in decent nick and will find conditions in New York much to her liking. We haven't see Hampton since she was turfed out of Wimbledon by Watson and that is not the kind of preparation one needs for a Grand Slam event.
Selection: Bartoli
Na Li (9) v Heather Watson 16:00 Court 17
H-to-H 0-0
It has been a whirlwind year for the young Brit Watson. She has climbed the rankings and has shown a real fighting spirit. She will continue to progress. Li on the other hand was starting to get a little embarrassed by her results. That was until a couple of weeks ago when she suddenly hit form in a big way. If she can keep that up she will be hard to stop this week.
Selection: Li
Sorana Cirstea v Sabine Lisicki (16) 16:00 Court 13
H-to-H 2-1
This is a really tough draw for both girls. Cirstea has the nod in the head to heads but that isn't really reflective of recent developments. I do think Cirstea has matured this year and has shown she is capable of beating the best on her day. Lisicki showed up again on grass but back on the hard courts you have to have a little less faith in her game.
Selection: Cirstea
Julia Goerges (18) v Kristyna Pliskova 16:00 Court 4
H-to-H 0-0
A battle of the big hitters here. Pliskova hasn't done too much but clearly enjoyed her spell on grass. Georges is equally as big but has a touch more class and if anything needs to use that more than going for the big shots.
Selection: Goerges
Nadia Petrova (19) v Jarmila Gajdosova 16:00 Court 7
H-to-H 3-0
Petrova is not to be taken lightly. She still has groundstrokes that are as powerful as anyone's and is pretty comfortable on the hard courts. The question mark is that she retired from her match a couple of weeks ago. Gajdosova has hardly won a match all season so this has to be out of her reach.
Selection: Petrova
Lucie Hradecka v Anabel Medina Garrigues (27) 16:00 Court 8
H-to-H 1-1
Hradecka is a power player who can cause problems to the best of players - she just doesn't do it often enough. Medina Garrigues is a real tough cookie and quite possibly Hradecka's idea of a nightmare. I can see the Spaniard frustrating Hradecka out of this one.
Selection: Medina Garrigues
Lesia Tsurenko v Casey Dellacqua 16:00 Court 12
H-to-H 0-0
Not a lot to choose between these girls in the rankings but Dellacqua is most definitely coming in here feeling the better of the two. It took a determined Jankovic to end her run in Texas and she will be pretty confident.
Selection: Dellacqua
Stephanie Foretz Gacon v Anna Tatishvili 16:00 Court 14
H-to-H 0-0
Foretz Gacon is probably over the hill now and isn't really producing a standard of performance that merits any belief she will make even small progress in a grand slam event. She hasn't won a match since Wimbledon and has had some serious shockers. Tatishvili is hardly tearing the place up but she has been solid enough.
Selection: Tatishvili
Mandy Minella v Olivia Rogowska 16:00 Court 15
H-to-H 0-0
Not a lot to choose between them although Minella has an edge in the rankings. Minella tries hard and isn't in the shabbiest of form by her standards. Rogowska has been getting beaten by players way down in the rankings but she played quite tidily in the qualifiers in Cincinnati last week.
Selection: Rogowska
Varvara Lepchenko (31) v Mathilde Johansson 18:00 Court 17
H-to-H 0-0
Lepchenko is underrated and goes about her game in a very business-like manner. She won't tear up any trees but you can expect her to put in a solid performance. Johansson has game but it isn't necessarily suited to these hard courts.
Selection: Lepchenko
Alexandra Cadantu v Aleksandra Wozniak 18:00 Court 8
H-to-H 0-1
Cadantu is another clay court specialist who won't relish this change in surface. She may be only 18 spots below Wozniak in the rankings but she really shouldn't get close to her at this tournament.
Selection: Wozniak
Simona Halep v Iveta Benesova 18:00 Court 12
H-to-H 2-1
Halep has some serious game and will not be about to let this chance go lightly. Her fight and determination will probably be too much for Benesova - who, although an undoubted talent, is not one to fight too hard when up against it.
Selection: Halep
Melanie Oudin v Lucie Safarova (15) 18:30 Louis Armstrong Stadium
H-to-H 0-2
Oudin is a difficult one to assess as she can be as awful as she can be brilliant. It may be that back in her home championship that she excels once again. Safarova is not one to be messed with however so Oudin will need to fire on all cylinders to challenge the Czech.
Selection: Safarova
Romina Oprandi v Andrea Petkovic 18:30 Court 11
H-to-H 0-0
Oprandi often gives her opponents a tough game but rarely does she come on top. If she could learn how to turn good play into wins she could be a top twenty player. Petkovic is only just back from an injury ravaged season. She has admitted she is rusty and not had the match practice necessary. She has the game to beat Oprandi but probably not the game time.
Selection: Oprandi
Timea Bacsinszky v Mallory Burdette 18:30 Court 6
H-to-H 0-0
Bacsinszky has had a difficult year and was forced to retire from a lot of games early in the season. She is on the road back and has been showing glimpses of form on the ITF circuit. Burdette had done nothing until July of this year and all of a sudden she has two ITF tournament wins to her name and has to be full of confidence.
Selection: Burdette
Edina Gallovits-Hall v Stefanie Voegele 18:30 Court 10
H-to-H 0-0
Gallovits-Hall is a battler alright but she rarely gets the rewards for her endeavours. Voegele had some reasonable early season hard court form but has spent most of the year plying her trade on the clay courts. I have a sneaky feeling Voegele may enjoy this match up.
Selection: Voegele
Lourdes Dominguez Lino v Sesil Karatantcheva 20:00 Court 8
H-to-H 0-0
Dominguez Lino is ranked higher than her opponent but it is fair to say that she is much more comfortable on clay courts. She doesn't have the power to compete on faster courts and clearly doesn't have much confidence on hard courts. Karatantcheva isn't a world beater but she is the opposite to the Spaniard and these conditions are to her advantage.
Selection: Karatantcheva
Maria Sharapova (3) v Melinda Czink 20:30 Arthur Ashe Stadium
H-to-H 0-0
There are few people in as good a form as Sharapova and we all know that she loves the big stage. Expect her to go very deep in the tournament. Czink is a little unlucky to draw Sharapova as she is in reasonable form and could have won against someone outside the top ten.
Selection: Sharapova
Polona Hercog v Petra Kvitova (5) 20:30 Grandstand
H-to-H 0-0
Hercog is a good young player but she really doesn't use her size as well as she could do. In a match-up against Kvitova this will be even more obvious. This kind of test is something Kvitova enjoys so this should be easy work.
Selection: Kvitova
Daniela Hantuchova v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (17) 20:30 Court 13
H-to-H 1-4
Hantuchova is never one to be under estimated. She has all the assets a top player requires but her wins are becoming less and less frequent. Pavlyuchenkova is a real powerhouse. She has taken care of Daniela the last four times they have met and I expect the same result again here.
Selection: Pavlyuchenkova
Samantha Crawford v Laura Robson 20:30 Court 4
H-to-H 0-0
Young American Crawford will be delighted to have made the first round proper but this is a massive step up. She has been competing in ITF events and to be honest not that impressively. Robson isn't that much older but is a lot more experienced and when she controls her game is a top ten player. Consistency is her problem.
Selection: Robson
Nicole Gibbs v Alize Cornet 20:30 Court 6
H-to-H 0-0
Interesting contest with Gibbs aiming to burst on the scene and show us what she can do. The 19 year old American is showing glimpses of what she has to offer and will be buoyed by the taste of her home Grand Slam. Unfortunately for her she has a tough task against Cornet. She is a terrific player with plenty of weapons. If she can stay injury free she could still get a decent high ranking.
Selection: Cornet
Yanina Wickmayer (25) v Julia Glushko 20:30 Court 7
H-to-H 0-0
Glushko has been in decent form on the ITF circuit but that is a completely different level to messing with the top girls. Wickmayer flatters to deceive a little as she doesn't make the most of her ability - but even a reasonable percentage of it today will be good enough.
Selection: Wickmayer
Anastasia Rodionova v Julia Cohen 20:30 Court 10
H-to-H 0-0
An interesting match-up here and one that both players will feel they should win. Rodionova's powers are waning in my opinion and when you get past 30 it is hard to get that back. Cohen got all the way to the final of the Baku Cup recently and will take some heart from that - although she is hardly one to put all your faith in.
Selection: Cohen
Kristina Mladenovic v Marina Erakovic 20:30 Court 15
H-to-H 0-0
Mladenovic does her best on the lower tours but that is as good as she is. Erakovic isn't exactly a world beater but she has enough game to get by at a certain level. This should be within her remit.
Selection: Erakovic
Pauline Parmentier v Michaella Krajicek 22:30 Court 6
H-to-H 0-0
Tricky one to call as we have Krajicek who we haven't see for a couple of months and Parmentier who is not one to put any trust in. In normal circumstances I would say this would go to Krajicek but I am worried about her form so it is a tentative pick for Parmentier.
Selection: Parmentier
Barbora Zahlavova Strycova v Kirsten Flipkens 22:30 Court 7
H-to-H 0-0
Flipkens has come through qualifying and will be very confident on this surface. Strycova is ranked significantly higher than her opponent but will be well aware the danger that she holds.
Selection: Flipkens
Victoria Azarenka (1) v Alexandra Panova 23:00 Louis Armstrong Stadium
H-to-H 1-0
Number one seed Azarenka would normally brush Panova aside no problems but be aware that she retired from her last match with a knee injury. It may well be precautionary but anyone wanting to back Azarenka outright will want to watch this match first. Panova is no mug but she will need Azarenka to be on one knee to beat her.
Selection: Azarenka
Virginie Razzano v Jie Zheng (28) 23:00 Court 11
H-to-H 1-0
This is hardly a battle of in form players but at the same time a great opportunity for both to get a much needed victory. Razzano hasn't been seen out since Wimbledon so although Zheng has had a poor start to the hard court season she at least has some game time under her belt. This will be a comfortable win for Zheng.
Selection: Zheng
Su-Wei Hsieh v Magdalena Rybarikova 23:00 Court 14
H-to-H 0-0
Hsieh had a reasonable Wimbledon but has been dumped out in the first round of her next two events. She isn't the type of player to make life easy for her opponent but is definitely susceptible to a power player. Rybarikova may be ranked lower but she is in decent nick and comes here with a lot of momentum.
Selection: Rybarikova
Victoria Duval v Kim Clijsters (23) 00:00 Arthur Ashe Stadium
H-to-H 0-0
This is a fantastic stage for young Duval to show what she has got but you have to think at just 16 she will struggle to cope with this task. Clijsters will not be thinking of ending her illustrious career in this way so expect her to progress easily.
Selection: Clijsters

Petra Martic v Sam Stosur (7) 16:00 Arthur Ashe Stadium
