Prix de Meautry Preview: Can Restiadargent be the one for the cash?

Restiadargent (yellow, white sleeves) was third to Black Caviar at Royal Ascot

Timeform's International Editor Chris Williams takes a look at this six-furlong Group 3, to be held at Deauville on Sunday...

There is the usual strong British challenge for the Prix de Meautry Lucien Barriere at Deauville on Sunday (13:30). David Elsworth saddles the siblings Swiss Dream and Swiss Spirit, while William Haggas and Clive Cox also hold each-way chances with Firebeam and Jimmy Styles respectively.

However, Restiadargent holds a clear chance if she can reproduce her form in Royal Ascot's Diamond Jubilee Stakes. There, she was beaten only a head and a neck by Black Caviar and Moonlight Cloud, staying on well, and she will be looking to put behind her a below-par effort in the Prix Maurice de Gheest on her latest outing.

Swiss Spirit failed to stay seven furlongs in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, having looked a smart sprinter in the making when a narrow winner of a listed race at Newbury in May from Lethal Force, and can get back on the right path back over this six furlongs.

The year-older Swiss Dream has won a couple of listed races, including one at Nottingham earlier this year, but hasn't run since finishing a respectable fifth to Fire Lily in the Ballyogan Stakes at Leopardstown in mid-June. Firebeam hasn't won yet this year, but has run respectably on his last two starts, finishing second to Soul in the Hackwood Stakes at Newbury and fourth to Chachamaidee in the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood.

Eight-year-old Jimmy Styles is another yet to visit the winners' enclosure this season- after nine starts- but has been runner-up on three occasions, including in the Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh, but he has twice been some way below form since.

Barbayam showed improvement when winning a listed race at Maisons-Laffitte last time by three lengths, going clear two furlongs out, so this drop down from seven furlongs shouldn't hold any problems for her. Shamalgan is much more experienced- though over longer distances- and this will be his first attempt at the trip since 2009- but he was caught only late on by Mashoora after setting a sound pace at seven furlongs in the Prix de La Porte Maillot at Longchamp last time.

Gammarth has improved out of the handicapping ranks to finish second in the Prix de Ris-Orangis at Maisons-Laffitte and in a listed race here, while Marchand d'Or, winner of this race last year (when Le Valentin was third), isn't quite so good nowadays and finished a place behind Gammarth in the Ris-Orangis. Mariol is another whose best days are behind him and was below form in a valuable handicap last time.
