The Dodgers will be real batting force now
The LA Dodgers have made a statement of intent with their latest mega deal, says Federico Farcomeni. Can they get a win over the Rockie on Monday night, and how will the depleted Red Sox fare?
LA Dodgers @ Colorado Rockies
On Saturday a mega deal took Adrian Gonzalez (127 million dollars), Carl Crawford (102.5) and Josh Beckett (31.5) to LA. James Loney, Allen Webster, Ivan De Jesus, Rubby De la Rosa and Jerry Sands depart from California and join the Red Sox. This is a statement of intent from the Dodgers. Their middle of the order is now loaded with Matt Kemp, Adrian Gonzalez, Andre Ethier and Manny Ramirez all ready to add firepower. In hitter-friendly Coors Field (the MLB ballpark with the highest points average of 1.533), having a punt on over 9.5 runs at 1.758/11 is a no-brainer. Experts claim Josh Beckett will now put his golf, beer and fried chicken problems behind him, and will be his former self again as the NL is an easier league to pitch. However, his debut is coming in the worst possible place to lift his 0-4, 7.59 ERA in his last six starts. If the Dodgers are to win, I can't see them doing so in the first five innings.
Kansas City Royals @ Boston Red Sox
In New England, pitcher Alfredo Aceves is providing the headlines. The Mexican tore off his shirt in disgust on Friday night when he was substituted and has been suspended for three games. The Red Sox seem to be self-imploding and their squad has been depleted by the deal with the Dodgers. They won't have unrest in the dressing room but it's quite late in the season for them to gel properly as a new team. Matsuzaka will be on the mound and considering that his contract expires at the end of the season, his commitment to the cause is not expected to be great. Neither Matsuzaka's nor Luke Hochevar (KC starting pitcher) records are good against the respective opponents, but Hochevar is coming off one of the most impressive matches of his career, allowing just one hit in eight innings in the Royals' 1-0 win at Tampa Bay last Tuesday, striking out a season-high 10. He's definitely more confident and could make the most of Boston's internal break-up.
Chicago White Sox @ Baltimore Orioles
Unlike football, where generally top-half of the table clashes are tense affairs, in baseball teams tend to unleash all their firepower when they are in playoff contention at this stage of the season. Collectively and individually, both the White Sox and Orioles have shown signs of strength. On Sunday, Chicago's Tyler Flowers hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, which was Chicago's 32nd in the last 16 games. The White Sox now lead the MLB with 43 HRs this month. Baltimore have recently regained their home form: after losing 11 of 14 at Camden Yards, the Orioles have won 10 of 13 there, averaging 5.5 runs and hitting 22 HRs in that stretch. At the same time, they have bolstered their rotation, acquiring Joe Saunders from Arizona yesterday. Starting pitchers Wei-Yin Chen (3.87 ERA) and Francisco Liriano (5.12) are both looking for a third consecutive win, but they can leak a few points in this game. In fact, Chen has allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings last week against Detroit in his last start, while Liriano is 0-2 with a 6.30 ERA against Baltimore this season.
