Petra Kvitova needs to up her game is she is to mount a serious challenge for the title
It's the start of the second round in the Women's singles today and Abelson Info have previewed every game scheduled to be on court...
Victoria Azarenka (1) v Kirsten Flipkens 16:00 Arthur Ashe Stadium
H-to-H 0-0
Flipkens squeezed through a tough first round tie and will be buoyed up for this. She can hit big and will give it a real go. However, Azarenka was serene in her opening round and although no properly tested there seemed to be little to worry about in regards to her recent injury.
Selection: Azarenka
Nadia Petrova (19) v Simona Halep 16:00 Court 17
H-to-H 0-1
Both of these women were tested in round one but came through no problem. Petrova at times looked great but it is fair to say that at this stage of her career that inconsistency is very much the norm. Halep is an underrated player and could surprise Petrova here. She has beaten her once already this year and could do so again.
Selection: Halep
Magdalena Rybarikova v Jie Zheng (28) 16:00 Court 13
H-to-H 2-0
Tricky one to call as Zheng is generally pretty impressive and a tough cookie to beat. She scraped past Razzano when her opponent retired and she has also been beaten twice by Rybarikova. The Slovakian was in decent nick here early and will fancy her chances but I just get a nagging feeling it won't be her day.
Selection: Zheng
Mallory Burdette v Lucie Hradecka 16:00 Court 11
H-to-H 0-0
Burdette did well on the opening day of the event and was very professional in disposing of a slightly out of sorts opponent. Hradecka most definitely had the more impressive win as I thought she would struggle against Medina-Garrigues. It makes sense to stick with someone in that type of form.
Selection: Hradecka
Aleksandra Wozniak v Lucie Safarova (15) 16:00 Court 4
H-to-H 1-2
Safarova may be the 15th seed but she isn't as clear cut a favourite for this as some would have you believe. Wozniak can mix it with the big girls and if Safarova isn't firing on all cylinders I can definitely see a shock on the cards here.
Selection: Wozniak
Varvara Lepchenko (31) v Anastasia Rodionova 18:00 Court 17
H-to-H 0-0
This is an interesting match-up between two players who will now firmly believe they can make the third round of a grand slam event. Rodionova dispatched of Cohen in no uncertain terms so will be ready to go. Lepchenko really struggled to see off Johansson but it was actually a pretty good quality contest and I can see Lepchenko benefiting from that tough run out.
Selection: Lepchenko
Yanina Wickmayer (25) v Pauline Parmentier 16:00 Court 4
H-to-H 0-0
Parmentier did well against a potentially awkward Krajicek in round one and will take heart from that. Wickmayer is another couple of levels up however and if she performs to her best will dispose of Parmentier in double quick time.
Selection: Wickmayer
Alize Cornet v Petra Kvitova (5) 18:30 Louis Armstrong Stadium
H-to-H 0-0
An intriguing clash in store here as title contender Kvitova is clear favourite but isn't the force she was last year. For a period against Hercog in her opening match she was really up against it. Followers will have to hope that was just opening day nerves. Cornet has bundles of ability but lacks a little in the temperament department. If she gets on top early she could well give Kvitova some real problems.
Selection: Kvitova
Na Li (9) v Casey Dellacqua 18:30 Grandstand
H-to-H 2-0
Dellacqua cruised through her first match but she needs to enjoy that moment as that is as good as it will get for her. Li is in tremendous form and really is a big danger for the title so this task will be no problem whatsoever.
Selection: Li
Kristyna Pliskova v Mandy Minella 18:30 Court 10
H-to-H 0-0
Both of these will be delighted to have come through tough opening draws. Pliskova especially will be pleased as Georges is one of the top players at the moment. Minella is one of those players that will grind you down and make you earn every point. This will be a big change up for Pliskova after the crash bang wallop of her first round.
Selection: Minella
Laura Robson v Kim Clijsters (23) 20:30 Arthur Ashe Stadium
H-to-H 0-0
Robson has a hitters chance. She goes big and when she is on she is a real handful. Over the next couple of years we could see her right near the top of the rankings. Clijsters however is fired up big style for her swansong and she will not be denied at this stage.
Selection: Clijsters
Kristina Mladenovic v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (17) 20:30 Court 13
H-to-H 0-0
It was a nice win for Mladenovic in the first round but that is as good as she is. She most certainly does not have the tools to compete with Pavlyuchenkova - who was in decent shape as she took care of a tricky first round clash with Hantuchova.
Selection: Pavlyuchenkova
Anna Tatishvili v Sorana Cirstea 20:30 Court 8
H-to-H 1-0
Tatishvili was ruthless in her destruction of Foretz-Gacon in round one but that was an easy draw and she faces a whole different ball game here. Cirstea was involved in a match that swung dramatically one way then the other before turfing out the much fancied Lisicki in three sets. Cirstea is getting more consistent as she matures and I believe we can rely on her to perform again.
Selection: Cirstea
Edina Gallovits-Hall v Sam Stosur (7) 23:00 Louis Armstrong Stadium
H-to-H 0-0
Gallovits-Hall did very well to beat Voegele to get to this stage but this is where her dream will end. Stosur is in good form and in no mood to give up on this title. Easy pickings for the Australian.
Selection: Stosur
Marion Bartoli (11) v Romina Oprandi 23:00 Court 11
H-to-H 0-0
I was surprised to see Bartoli tested so much by Hampton in round one and that has me wondering a little bit about her form. I do take into account however she often does play to her opponents level. In Oprandi she has a real problem. She can play to a very high level and will fancy she can take Bartoli. This has all the hallmarks of a very close encounter.
Selection: Bartoli
Maria Sharapova (3) v Lourdes Dominguez Lino 00:00 Arthur Ashe Stadium
H-to-H 0-0
This is just a stepping stone for Sharapova. Destructive in round one and whilst she will find Dominguez Lino a tougher nut to crack she will do so and progress to round two with the minimum of fuss.
Selection: Sharapova
