Back Peng to advance towards the Semi Finals at Flushing Meadows..
We're down to the final eight in New York and Abelson Info preview the first two quarter-final clashes set for Tuesday...
Starlet Eugenie Bouchard crashed out of the tournament on Monday, but the focus now returns to the bottom half of the draw where we are guaranteed an unlikely semi-finalist.
Given that this quarter contained the likes of Agnieszka Radwanska, Angelique Kerber and Jelena Jankovic, it is a huge surprise to see two unseeded players make it this far.
While Shuai Peng does have experience at this level, she has dealt with the pressure of flying the flag for China well over the past week after Li Na was unable to take part due to injury.
The 28-year-old has defeated Radwanska, Vinci and Safarova in consecutive rounds without losing a single set, and she will be hoping to carry that momentum into her next encounter.
That next challenge will pit her against Belinda Bencic, with the teenager continuing to live up to her tag as one of the rising stars on the WTA tour.
The Swiss starlet became the youngest player to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open since her mentor Martina Hingis did it back in 1997, and the 17-year-old is clearly relishing performing on the big stage despite her inexperience.
Her run to this point is equally as impressive considering she has now defeated the likes of Kerber and Jankovic in the last two rounds, similarly without dropping a set, but she does start as the 2.245/4 underdog.
As mentioned above, Peng is really on a roll having played some great tennis over the past week and with the way she is hitting the ball coupled with her confidence being sky-high, we see the world number 39 progressing.
Meanwhile, in the other clash of the day, Caroline Wozniacki will be looking to build on her thrilling performance last time out after beating Maria Sharapova in a three-set battle.
The Dane came into the tournament showing signs that she was on the cusp of returning to her best form, but more importantly, being capable of competing with the top seeds.
Close encounters with Serena Williams would have been a boost for morale as her form improved, and that conviction would have been further enhanced after prevailing against the fifth seed.
Whether or not she can now build momentum and use it as a catalyst to go on and win a major remains to be seen, but we expect her to come through her next test against Sara Errani.
The Italian ace has been impressive this week, performing well on a surface that isn't exactly her favourite to play on. Considering that as well as the fact that she has come through back-to-back three-set matches, it could take its toll on the 13th seed.
Wozniacki is a strong favourite to win, so the games market is where the value lies and this one might not last as long as the pair's previous matches in New York this year.
