Brendan Rodgers' men survived a scare at home to Boro
Mike Norman rounds up Tuesday night's In-Play betting activity as Liverpool survive a scare at home to Middlesbrough and Southampton win at Arsenal...
Liverpool needed an incredible 14-13 penalty shoot-out win to reach the last-16 of the League Cup after finally getting the better of in-form Championship side Middlesbrough at Anfield this evening.
Brendand Rodgers started the game with an attack that included Raheem Sterling, Adam Lallana, and Rickie Lambert, but it was youngster Jordan Rossiter who put the home side in front in the early stages.
The Liverpool teenager, making his senior debut for the Reds, capitalised on a mix-up in the Boro defence to pass the ball virtually into an empty net from all of 25 yards. The 17-year-old was matched at 26.025/1 in the First Goalscorer market.
Middlesbrough got back into the game just after the hour mark when Adam Reach got his head onto a Grant Leadbitter free-kick to glance the ball home.
And it was the Teesside club that twice went close to winning the game in 90 minutes through Adam Clayton, first from a thunderbolt 25-yard shot that was brilliantly saved by Simon Mignolet, and then when he struck the post from an acute angle inside the box.
But the game went to extra-time - the draw in 90 minutes was matched at 8.27/1 with the 1-1 Correct Score being matched at 18.017/1.
Suso gave Liverpool the lead early in the second period of ET and with just seconds of the game remaining the Reds were matched at 1.011/100 to win without the need for penalties. But a mistake by Sterling was pounced on by Boro and Kolo Toure conceded a penalty - Patrick Bamford picked himself up and scored from the spot.
And so to a penalty shoot-out we went.
Mario Balotelli got the scoring underway with a cool finish, and then Bamford, just moments after extending the game, missed his spot-kick to hand the home side the advantage. But when Sterling missed the final regulation penalty this remarkable game continued.
And so the penalties kept hitting the back of the net, both goalkeepers fired and scored, and the score reached 14-13 when Albert Adomah became the unfortunate player to miss, handing Liverpool a dramatic victory.
The Reds were matched at 15.014/1 to win on penalties in the Qualifying Method market.
Southampton's fantastic early season form continued with a 1-2 victory at the Emirates Stadium over inconsistent Arsenal.
The Gunners took an early lead through a stunning Alexis Sanchez free-kick - matched at 7.26/1 to score the first goal of the game - but the Saints were soon level after Dusan Tadic converted from the spot.
But it was Ronald Koeman's men who won the game thanks to arguably the goal of the night. A Saints corner was cleared only as far as Nathaniel Clyne and the right-back took one touch before smashing the ball home from all of 35 yards.
Southampton were matched at 8.615/2 to win on the night, while the 1-2 Correct Score hit a high of 18.017/1 In-Play.
Elsewhere this evening both Stoke and Swansea won their all-Premier League ties against Sunderland and Everton respectively.
Stoke were matched at 7.87/1 as they came from a goal down to beat the Black Cats, with the 1-2 Correct Score being matched at 16.015/1, while Swansea's comfortable 3-0 victory over the Toffees was matched at the rewarding odds of 40.039/1.
Other notable results included Bournemouth's 0-3 win at Cardiff - a scoreline that was matched at 46.045/1 in the Correct Score market - and League Two outfit Shrewsbury (matched at 4.84/1 for the win) getting the better of Championship highflyers Norwich.
After Tuesday night's results Chelsea remain the marginal favourites to win the Capital One Cup at 4.94/1, just ahead of Manchester City at 5.39/2, with Liverpool third best at 7.06/1.
