Champions League on Betfair: Bayern punish City with last-gasp winner and Chelsea held by Schalke

Joe Hart was in inspired form for Man City against Bayern

It was heartbreak for Manchester City as they came so close to grabbing a fantastic point at Bayern Munich, and Chelsea couldn't find a way past Schalke at Stamford Bridge...

It was always going to be a tough opening fixture for Manuel Pellegrini's men, and it almost fell to pieces inside a minute after Thomas Muller broke through the defensive line and nearly scored, but Manchester City gave a good account of themselves at the Allianz Arena before succumbing to a devastating late blow at the hands of one of their former players, Jerome Boateng.

Boateng was matched at a huge 90.089/1 to be first goalscorer on the night, and the goal coming so late meant that Bayern were matched as high as 8.27/1 to clinch the win, with the correct score trading at 12.011/1.

It's no consolation for City fans, but there were plenty of positives to be drawn from the performance, not least in the shape of Joe Hart who was in inspired form to keep the Germans out again and again before the away side finally succumbed. Man City are now available to be backed at 17.016/1 to lift this year's Champions League, with the impressive-looking Bayern trading at 5.24/1 second favourites.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea couldn't find the extra bit of quality to record the win over Schalke and the game finished in a 1-1 draw. Klass Jan Huntelaar cancelled out Cesc Fabregas' opener 25 minutes from time, and the stalemate was matched at a large 16.015/1 as traders clearly thought the Blues had what it took to see the tie out. The 1-1 correct score traded at 28.027/1, and Chelsea are now 8.27/1 to lift the trophy this season.

Elsewhere, Roma recorded a huge 5-1 win over CSKA Moscow, and the other stand out result was Porto's 6-0 drubbing of BATE Borisov. Ajax played out a 1-1 draw with PSG, Barcelona narrowly overcame Apoel Nicosia 1-0, Maribor secured a creditable draw at home to Sporting and Athletic Bilbao got their first Champions League campaign for 16 years off to a decent start with a 0-0 draw against Shakhtar.

Real Madrid remain favourites in the Champions League outright market at 5.14/1.
