Against All Odds: Look to the Oeste for value

The Vasco da Gama fans deserve better than Serie B

It's Brazilian Serie B action for Paul Robinson tonight as he thinks Vasco da Gama have to be opposed at odds-on for their trip to Oeste.

Oeste v Vasco da Gama
Wednesday September 17, 01:50 BST

Oeste have got their campaign back on track of late as three wins and a draw from their last five outings has helped them climb to 15th in the table - two places and three points above the relegation zone.

Perhaps most impressively, is that three of those four positive results came against clubs in the top half of the table - including a 3-1 victory over fourth placed, Ceara.

Jos Macena's side may still be nearer the bottom than the top, but that is mainly down to their results on the road, as at home, they've actually lost just once this term.

Vasco da Gama were relegated from the top flight last year but they are looking good to go straight back up. With only 16 fixtures left to play, they are up in third place and the top four earn promotion.

Joel Santana can't afford for his players to have a drop off in form though and he will be pleased by the fact that they've taken seven points from a possible nine of late. It is however worth considering that of their 11 matches played away from home this season, only four resulted in wins.

I can accept the fact that Vasco da Gama are the favourites but there is no way they should be so short in the betting. That's why, at around the 1.635/8 mark, I have to make them my lay of the day.
