Premier League Review - A memorable weekend for Leicester City

What a Sunday afternoon for Nigel Pearson

Manchester City and Chelsea was meant to be the game of the weekend but the appetiser served up something quite spectacular. Alex Johnson rounds up the weekend action from the Premier League.

The latest round of Premier League fixtures saw some shock results, but nothing sent more shockwaves than what unfolded at Leicester.

It was an incredible afternoon at the King Power Stadium as Leicester produced an amazing comeback to stun Manchester United and record a memorable 5-3 victory.

It seemed like a cakewalk for United as goals from Robin van Persie, Angel Di Maria and Ander Herrera had then 3-1 up after 57 minutes. But what transpired over the next 30 minutes showed how fragile United are at the back.

David Nugent scored a controversial penalty to say the least after Rafael was adjudged to have brought down Jamie Vardy in the box seconds after the Leicester man looked to have blatantly pushed him over. Esteban Cambiasso then equalised and goals from Jamie Vardy and Leonardo Ulloa's second of the game sent the home fans into rapture.

United have just one win in five league games and all the optimism which was rife after last week's simple win over QPR has now vanished again. For all their attacking talents, there remains no doubt that the defence is weak and this United team has a fragile core which can be easily punished.

Compared to the red-hot action at Leicester, Sunday's headline game between Manchester City and Chelsea merely simmered along for long periods. The game ended 1-1 to end Chelsea's 100% start but Jose Mourinho's side did go three points clear at the top.

Andrea Schurrle scored just after Pablo Zabaleta was sent off for City, but a familiar face came back to haunt Chelsea. Once Frank Lampard was brought on for City and both sets of fans were chanting his name, it seemed set in stone that the Chelsea icon would steal the headlines.

And so he did when Lampard, Chelsea's all-time record goalscorer, haunted his old club with a late goal to ensure the points were shared at the Etihad. City didn't deserve to lose the game and Chelsea probably didn't deserve to win it, so a score draw looks a fair result.

Arsenal bounced back from their Champions League disappointment and scored three goals in four first half minutes to beat Aston Villa at Villa Park. Gunners fans will have enjoyed seeing the much-maligned Mesut Ozil put in his best performance for a long while, scoring one and setting up Danny Welbeck for his first goal for the club.

Once Aly Cissokho had turned through his own net to make it 3-0 after 36 minutes the game really petered out. But that scintillating first-half performance from Arsenal should shake off some of the cobwebs from the devastating night in Dortmund.

While Arsenal got back into their groove, things went from bad to worse for Liverpool in the Premier League. After last weekend's home loss to Villa they needed to bounce back at West Ham, but goals from Winston Reid, Diafra Sakho and Morgan Amalfitano wrapped up a deserved 3-1 win for Sam Allardyce's team.

Liverpool were shocking defensively and found themselves two down within seven minutes, and from that point on they were always chasing the game. Raheem Sterling got one back before the break and Adrian had to make some good saves to keep the Hammers in front, before a defensive mistake by Mamadou Sakho presented Stewart Downing, who shone against his former club, the chance to set up Amalfitano for the winner.

It is three defeats in five Premier League games for Liverpool and the post-Luis Suarez era hasn't started well for Brendan Rodgers.

The pressure still remains on Newcastle manager Alan Pardew but it could have been a lot worse had Papiss Cisse not come off the bench to score twice and haul the Magpies back to a 2-2 draw with Hull at St James' Park.

The fans, who showed their anger at Pardew without managing the mass protest which had been predicted, saw Nikica Jelavic and Mohamed Diame put Hull ahead with two sensational goals. But Pardew threw Cisse on and his first goals since March brought Newcastle, and possibly his manager, back from the brink. Pardew still remains under huge pressure on Tyneside but this result might have given him a bit more breathing space.

There was a shock at Goodison Park as Everton suffered a post-Europa League hangover as Crystal Palace earned a 3-2 win for their first victory of the season. It means the Eagles are still unbeaten under Neil Warnock and the veteran boss looks to have got the grit back among the team.

Palace were really well organised and came back from going behind, as goals from Mile Jedinak, Fraizer Campbell and Yannick Bolasie was enough for all three points. They weathered an early Everton storm and then proceeded to stun Goodison Park - this will give Palace lots of belief for the coming weeks.

Southampton are up to second in the Premier League and Ronald Koeman's side are quietly impressing this season. They won 1-0 at Swansea thanks to a Victor Wanyama goal and the Dutch manager is doing really well considering the Saints lost five key players during the summer.

Swansea will point to Wilfried Bony's sending off just before the break as the turning point in the game, as that did change things in Southampton's favour.

However it was a professional performance from the Saints and Koeman is doing a good rebuilding job on the South Coast.

Elsewhere this weekend, Niko Kranjcar scored a fantastic late free-kick to rescue QPR as the West London club drew 2-2 with Stoke at Loftus Road.

West Brom earned their first victory of the campaign as they stunned Tottenham 1-0 at White Hart Lane thanks to a James Morrison header. It was a deserved win for the Baggies that should take some pressure off the shoulders of Alan Irvine.

Spurs showed 10 changes from the Europa League game on Thursday but they struggled and managed only one shot on target. And finally, Burnley and Sunderland played out a scrappy and poor goalless draw at Turf Moor. It leaves both sides still searching for a first win of campaign.
