The Big Wednesday Multiple: South American Special

The smiles are back on the faces of Gremio fans

It's that time of the week where Paul Robinson selects a home win, an away win, a match to go over 2.5 goals and a match to go under 2.5 goals. Here are his selections...

Bet 1: Gremio (HOME) @ 1.57 (4/7)

Gremio are on the climb following back to back victories as they are now up to sixth in the Campeonato - just three points adrift of automatic qualification into next season's Copa Libertadores.

'Big Phil' Scolari didn't make a great start to life back in club management but wins over Corinthians, Bahia and most recently at the in-form, Flamengo, must be real confidence boosters for a man who's had a troubled few months.

Atletico PR were one of the surprise packages of last term as they finished in third place having only just earned promotion. Things haven't been so good under a new manager this year though as they are down in 11th and were knocked out of the Libertadores during the group phase.

The 'Hurricane' come into this match on a five game winless run in the league and they have managed just one point from a possible 12 on the road of late - conceding an alarming nine goals.

Bet 2: Internacional (AWAY) @ 2.25 (5/4)

Internacional are having a much better time of things this season as after 19 games they are up in third place in the division. While they have suffered a couple of recent setbacks in the last week - a Copa Sudamericana exit and a collapse at home to Figueirense on Sunday - I am confident that they can bounce back.

Abel Braga's men have won three of their last four away from home - keeping three clean sheets in the process. It's also worth considering that they haven't been beaten by tonight's opponents since 2009.

Vitoria BA are floundering at the bottom of the league and even though Ney Franco has recently returned to the club, they come into this match on the back of four straight league defeats.

The Salvadoran based club have lost their last two in front of their own fans - both against teams who were in the bottom half of the division at the time - and they've netted just once in three outings at home.

Bet 3: Figueirense v Fluminense (Over 2.5 goals) @ 2.2 (6/5)

Figueirense are on the rise since the appointment of Argel Fucks as manager and after they came back from 2-0 to beat Internacional 3-2 on Sunday, they are now up to 12th in the table, without a defeat in seven.

That game at the weekend went over 2.5 goals and with 17 scored and 25 conceded this term, their matches are averaging 2.21 goals per 90 minutes. While only half a dozen of their 19 have had three or more, four of those have happened since the new manager took over eight games ago.

Fluminense are having a much better campaign this year and they find themselves up in fifth place having picked up 31 points from a possible 57. They are within touching distance of the Copa Libertadores places, but they have only won one of their last six.

As far as the goals go, with 31 scored and 19 conceded, their fixtures have been averaging 2.63 goals per 90 minutes, with seven of them going over 2.5. Two of those came in their last three outings and they netted eight goals themselves during that period.

Bet 4: Palmeiras v Criciuma (Under 2.5 goals) @ 1.61 (8/13)

Palmeiras were only promoted back to the top flight of Brazilian football this season but they are in danger of going straight back down after losing 11 of their 19 league games. That has left them one place above the relegation zone and defeat tonight would plunge them straight into it.

It's the goal-side of things we're interested in here though and the stats show us that Dorival Jnior's men have had their last five in all competitions finish with two goals or less. They scored just twice during that period and three of them actually ended up with just the one goal.

Criciuma are also struggling and they are actually in the dreaded drop zone.  The problem for them has been in front of goal as with just nine scored, no other team has netted fewer.

That has led to their fixtures averaging a mere 1.79 goals each time, with 15 of their 19 going under 2.5. Their last seven in the league have all ended up with two or less and they haven't scored a league goal in over nine hours of football.
