After world number one Serena Williams crashed out of the tournament, it appeared as though it was another perfect opportunity for Maria Sharapova to take advantage of her absence and win yet another Grand Slam.

With the top half of the draw opening up, the Russian could not deliver and was outdone by Angelique Kerber, with the German ace prevailing in three sets to overcome a significant mental barrier when it comes to major tournaments.

Having made the final at Eastbourne, Kerber has seemingly continued her strong form on grass, and in the process she has now set up an intriguing quarter-final against Canadian starlet Eugenie Bouchard.

The 20-year-old is aiming to make a third successive Grand Slam semi-final and she has undoubtedly been one of the most improved players on the tour over the past year.

While many describe her as a 'rising star' of the ladies game, Bouchard is essentially already amongst the top players in the world, and despite Kerber's confidence being sky high at this stage, her opponent is still regarded as the favourite.

The pair have split their two previous meetings with Kerber winning at the US Open back in 2013, while Bouchard sealed an emphatic win at the French Open last month as she continues to go from strength to strength.

Given Bouchard's consistency, we envisage the Canadian coming out on top and continuing on her path to becoming a permanent fixture in the world's top 10.

Meanwhile, on Centre Court, the level of quality is just as good as last year's finalist Sabine Lisicki takes on third seed Simona Halep in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.

Lisicki makes no secret of her love for this surface and particularly playing at Wimbledon, and she has shown that again this year with the highlight being her third round victory over Ana Ivanovic.

The German star was made to work for her win against Yaroslava Shvedova last time out, but it was just another test passed as she looks to go one step further than last year and claim what would be the biggest prize in her career thus far.

However, she will have to do something she hasn't done in three years, and that is defeat Halep, with the Romanian winning their last two encounters.

Nevertheless, despite her meteoric rise to the top over the past 12 months, Halep was pushed to the limit in both those victories, and we envisage this following a similar pattern.

While Lisicki has undoubtedly endeared herself to the locals at SW19, this has the potential to be a classic match-up, and although Halep is considered a strong favourite, this could go the distance just as it has done in the last two battles with Lisicki edging closer to her dream.
