World Cup 2014 End of Day Report: Germany draw, Argentina win, neither convince

Tap-in king: Klose's 15th World Cup goal rescued the draw for Germany

Adam Shearwood looks at how the Betfair markets have reacted to today's fixtures, which featured the second and third favourites in late rallies.

We have a new contender for game of the tournament!

Perhaps make that a new contender for best half of football of the tournament - we're best forgetting the first half. The second half of Germany v Ghana was a thriller, as two attack-minded teams slugged it out in the Fortaleza heat.

Germany had been 1.374/11 hot favourites before kick off, with Ghana 9.809/1. By the time Mario Gotze had given Germany the lead, courtesy of a cowering, weak header than ricocheted off his thigh and into the net, Germany were in to 1.171/6 for the win with Ghana trading at a high of 34.033/1.

Those odds were flipped around just 12 minutes later, following two incisive attacks from the Black Stars that gave them a 2-1 lead. Ghana went on to trade at a low of 1.768/11 for the win. The draw - the eventual result - had been matched at a high of 12.011/1 with 2-2 trading In-Play at 85.084/1.

Germany drift in the Winner 2014 market - out to 5.24/1 from 4.94/1 pre-match - but remain second favourites behind Brazil.

The odds on Ghana qualifying from Group G have shortened, although with only one point to show for their considerable exertions in two topsy-turvy matches, they still face a struggle - 7.06/1 from 11.5n/a - to reach the Last 16.

Thomas Muller's blank in front of goal sees him drift in the Golden Boot market - 6.25/1 from 3.412/5 pre-match - while his rivals have seen their odds shorten. One of those rivals had earlier left it pretty late to remind the world of his match-winning (World Cup-winning?) abilities.

When Lionel Messi picked the ball up in the first minute of injury time about 40 yards from goal against Iran, the scores were locked at 0-0 and the shock result of the tournament so far was on the cards. Seconds later, the ball was in the back of the Iranian net, sent there by Messi's magical left boot.

That moment meant Argentina maintained their status as third favourites for the trophy - 5.59/2 - and Messi remained in the hunt for the Golden Boot - 7.87/1. AND, the world continued to wonder if he can drag an ordinary Argentine side to ultimate glory.
