Against All Odds: Goals to flow Stateside

This should be an entertaining match for the fans in attendance

The World Cup may be having a rest day but there's plenty of action elsewhere and Paul Robinson has taken a look at the late MLS game featuring the Portland Timbers and Kansas City.

Portland topped the Western Conference last season and eventually finished third overall in the MLS standings. Things haven't been going quite as well this time around however as after 16 matches they are down in sixth place - two points adrift of the Final Series places.

The problem for Caleb Porter's side has been at the back as with 27 goals conceded, they have won of the worst goals against to games ratio in the entire MLS. The Timbers score for fun at the other end though and their matches this year are averaging 3.44 goals each time. Their last three home scorelines have been 3-3, 3-4 and 2-2, and in every fixture this term at Providence Park, both teams have got on the scoresheet.

Sporting Kansas finished as runners up in the Eastern Conference in 2013 and they ended up being the MLS runners up. They are in good shape to go close again this season as after 15 matches they sit third in their division - just three points behind the leaders DC United.

Peter Vermes' sets his team up to not concede many goals but they will have to resist an attacking onslaught tonight. The Wizards kept a clean sheet last time out in a 2-0 win at Houston, but prior to that it was five in a row without one - conceding twice to Chicago Fire, Philadelphia Union and Toronto.

The last time these two clubs faced each other the score was 3-1 to Portland. There should be plenty of goals again, so with under 2.5 trading at around the 1.9620/21 mark, I have to make it my lay of the day.
