Daniel Sturridge fails in front of goal in Costa Rica 0-0 draw

No dancing tonight as Sturridge missed several chances for England

Talk about ending with a whimper. England drew 0-0 with Costa Rica and Daniel Sturridge struggled as England failed to record a victory in Brazil.

England exited the World Cup in low-key fashion with a 0-0 draw against Costa Rica in a low-key affair in Belo Horizonte.

Roy Hodgson's side created the clearer openings in a tight match but Daniel Sturridge squandered several presentable chances as Los Ticos secured the point that ensured they finished at the top of Group D.

Such a scenario seemed highly unlikely less than three weeks when England drew 2-2 in a friendly with Ecuador in Miami, but in truth they lacked the quality to win their way through to the last-16 in Brazil.

Hodgson decided to make nine changes to the side that lost 2-1 to Uruguay with the veteran Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard captaining the side, while the likes of Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Ross Barkley all got the chance to shine.

England started the match very nervously and, in the fourth minute, Costa Rica's Arsenal striker Joel Campbell saw his shot deflected narrowly wide with Ben Foster beaten.

Sturridge then clipped a shot inches wide after being set up by Jack Wilshere before Costa Rica created their best opening of the match midway through the first half - Celso Borges' free-kick being tipped onto the bar by Foster when it appeared to be destined for the top corner.

Just before the half-hour mark Sturridge thought he should have had a penalty when he appeared to be bundled over by Oscar Duarte but the referee disagreed and waved play on.

England enjoyed a spell of dominance just before the interval. They won three corners in quick succession and, from the last of them, Sturridge headed over the bar from inside the six-yard area after Phil Jones had headed the ball back into the danger-area.

On the stroke of half time, Everton's Ross Barkley, who had a quiet game, did well to make space for himself before lashing his shot high and wide.

At the start of the second period, Sturridge squandered another chance with a poor first touch which allowed Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas to race off his line and smother the ball.

Navas then did really well to cut Lallana's low cross out as Sturridge waited to tap the ball home.

The Liverpool man then wasted his best chance, slipping a shot wide from ten yards out after good play by Wilshere.

With ten minutes left Navas tipped Wayne Rooney's long-range chip over the bar as England's tournament came to a depressing end.
