Bad behaviour - Suarez feigned injury after biting Chiellini
This World Cup has had many great moments, but the final round of Group C matches served little to cheer. Adam Shearwood assesses the fallout on the Betfair markets.
Giorgio Chiellini became the latest victim of Luis Suarez's appetite for nibbling opponents. The Italian centre back joined Otman Bakkal and Branislav Ivanovic on the end of the Uruguayan star's toothpick, following a second half incident that could yet have serious repercussions for La Celeste's chances of winning a third World Cup.
Betfair customers appear wary of FIFA taking retrospective action against the Uruguayan hitman. Uruguay were initially in to 32.031/1 from 50.049/1 for 2014 Winner having gained the win that saw them leapfrog Italy into the second qualification spot in Group C. However, at time of writing they were on the drift, back out to 36.035/1 as news of Suarez's indiscretion, and possible suspension, circulated.
The game had already suffered one major controversial incident, with Italian midfielder Claudio Marchisio receiving a straight red for a messy challenge on Egidio Rios. Uruguay went on to capitalise on their man advantage, with inspirational captain Diego Godin converting an 81st minute corner to snatch the win, and land at odds of 44.043/1 for first goalscorer.
Meanwhile, the other game in Group C saw Costa Rica seal serene progress to the Last 16, as they played out a goalless draw with England.
England had the better of the match but failed to convert a number of presentable chances. Roy Hodgson's young side avoid the ignominy of leaving the competition without a single point, however, still finish bottom of the group - an outcome that was available at odds of 12.5n/a pre-tournament.
Costa Rica had been matched at a high of 130.0129/1 to top the group. Now, they're just 70.069/1 to win the tournament, having been available at 1000.0n/a before the start.
