World Cup 2014 Report: Vertonghen books US showdown for perfect Belgians

A captain's performance: Vertonghen's goal capped a strong display

The line-up for the Last 16 is complete, with Belgium and Algeria booking their spots from Group H. Adam Shearwood assesses tonight's games and looks forward to some knockout football...

The adage goes that attack wins games but defence wins championships. If that's the case, then Belgium look like they might have what it takes to go the distance following another rugged defensive showing tonight.

It is presumably of extra benefit if your defenders can also attack, as Jan Vertonghen demonstrated by snaffling a loose ball to calmly register the only goal of the game versus South Korea. The Spurs man was matched at 42.041/1 to open the scoring.

Belgium finish on maximum points and in top spot of Group H - by no means the most straightforward of groups - and with just one goal conceded. Tonight, they managed to keep a clean sheet despite spending most of the game with ten men - Steven Defour receiving a straight red for a nasty first half tackle.

With in-demand striker Divock Origi coming on to give his side some added thrust up-front, The Red Devils find themselves with some new friends on the exchange, now in to 23.022/1 from 25.024/1 pre-match to win the tournament outright.

Firstly, they'll need to overcome the USA in the Last 16, in a contest between two of the more robust sides left in the competition.

The final fixture to be decided was Germany v Algeria - for much of the match it had looked as though the Germans would be facing Fabio Capello's Russia - however, a poor error from Igor Akinfeev (another goalkeeping error!) allowed Islam Slimani to guide home the header that sealed his nation's first ever appearance in the knockout stages of a World Cup.

Algeria are 340.0339/1 outsiders of the remaining teams to lift the trophy. However, when you consider they have been matched for over 12,000 at 1000.0n/a, it gives you an idea of how well they've performed to date. Germany, not wholly convincing against the USA, best be wary of the Desert Foxes.
