The new pass masters: Chile outfought and outplayed Spain
A display of teamwork and unity from Chile helped them to an easy win over the defending champions, while the Netherlands rode their luck in victory over Australia. Adam Shearwood looks at how the Group B results have affected the Betfair markets...
Seven days into the World Cup and the defending champions are out - Spain's attempt to win a fourth consecutive major championship coming to an ignominious end with a 2-0 defeat to Chile . The result was available at 46.045/1 before kick off.
Spain, pre-tournament 7.26/1 third favourites to win the competition, will now play a final game against Australia in a battle to avoid the Group B wooden spoon.
Chile simply had too much on the day. They were vibrant, hard-working and inventive, with each individual outfighting his opponent and allowing the team unit to prosper. No one will relish facing them in the knock-out phases.
Before that, they face the Netherlands to decide who tops Group B and avoids a probable showdown with Brazil in the Last 16 - Chile are 3.185/40 to get the win they require.
Earlier, the Netherlands had to come from behind against an Australian side who displayed similar team unity and intensity as Chile.
If it weren't for a missed opportunity and a goalkeeping error, Australia - matched at 1.758/11 for 14,000 In-Play - may well have beaten the Dutch. As it was, Matthew Leckie missed a gilt-edged opportunity to put them 3-2 up, right before a speculative effort from Memphis Depay went through the weak hands of Mat Ryan to give Netherlands the victory.
The Arjen Robben to score first and Netherlands to win 3-2 scorecast had been matched by one happy customer at 270.0269/1 for 10!
Robben has now scored eight in his last eight internationals, and with three goals this World Cup moves to 14.5n/a for the Golden Boot. His compatriot, Robin van Persie, also has three goals following his clinical strike today and is available at 12.5n/a to top the scoring charts - although he'll miss the game against Chile having picked up two yellow cards in two games.
The Netherlands have come right in to 12.011/1 for Winner 2014, which may appear short to those who witnessed how much they struggled against Australia.
Chile's odds have also tumbled - they're in to 24.023/1 from a pre-tournament mark of 55.054/1 - but given how impressive they were in victory tonight, may still represent an excellent value bet.
