Premier League: Top five Chelsea v Man Utd clashes

Last year's clash finished in a 3-3 draw

Alex Lee looks back at some of the greatest recent clashes between Chelsea and Manchester United ahead of this week's top-of-the-table encounter...

Chelsea 3-3 Man United, Premier League 2011/12

In February 2012, Manchester United fought back from three goals down to earn a point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and send Betfair into virtual meltdown with some of the most frenzied trading seen last season. While United haven't won at Chelsea for 10 years, their three-all draw certainly felt like a win given the circumstances - the Pensioners hadn't previously failed to win a Premier League fixture that they'd led by three or more.

Despite earning an away point, however, the Red Devils would look back on the result as a case of two points dropped as bitter rivals Man City ultimately took the title by the narrowest of margins.

Chelsea 1-1 (5-6 pens) Man United, Champions League Final 2007/08

No-one will forget John Terry's miss in the 2008 European Champions League Final, but the Chelsea and England defender wasn't the only superstar who failed miserably from the spot that evening. The 90 minutes finished 1-1, with Ronaldo and Lampard notching, but the real drama began in extra time when Drogba was sent off for striking Vidic. Despite going down to 10 men, Chelsea hung on for penalties and after Ronaldo missed, Terry had the chance to cover himself in glory. He missed, the shoot-out went to sudden death, and Anelka's miss sealed Chelsea's fate, presenting United their third Champions League trophy.

Chelsea 3-5 Man United, FA Cup 1997/98

After going 5-0 ahead, United leaked three late goals to create some unexpected 'squeaky bum time' on the Reds' bench.

Beckham bagged two, as did Andy Cole, with Sheringham adding the fifth, before Chelsea woke from their slumber and made some semblance of a fightback. While the Pensioners never looked like snatching a surprise draw, the game will be remembered for not just the number of goals scored but the quality of some of the strikes.

Manchester United 3-3 Chelsea, Premier League 2000/01

Much like Sunday's fixture, both teams fancied themselves for the Premier League title at the start of the season, but Chelsea travelled to Old Trafford in hope rather than expectation, given their run of only one win in their first six league games.

In a breathless and topsy-turvy match, Chelsea led through prolific striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, only for the home team to hit back and take a 3-1 lead. A mistake by goalkeeper Van der Gouw, however, gifted Chelsea a goal, making it 3-2 at half-time.

Norway international Tor Andre Flo scored the equaliser with his second of this high-octane encounter to earn a point for the then manager Claudio Ranieri.

Chelsea 5-0 Manchester United, Premier League 1999/00

It's not often United are on the wrong end of a five-nil spanking, and even the most rabid spin doctor would fail to find anything positive from their performance at Stamford Bridge in 1999. Chelsea, on the other hand, played some majestic football, carving their way through the Manchester United defence like Freddy Krueger on steroids.

With enfant terrible Massimo Taibi in goal for the Reds it was perhaps less of a surprise that Chelsea bagged five, but Taibi's fragility notwithstanding, the Pensioners never let up against a side that was expected to at least put up some sort of a fight. On the scoresheet for Chelsea that day were Gus Poyet (2), the long-forgotten Chris Sutton and Jody Morris with a Henning Berg own goal providing the embarrassing sandwich filling.
