Steeler: Timeform's fancy for the RP Trophy
Timeform give their view on Saturday's Group 1 feature...
Birdman just failed in Group 2 at Newmarket and similar form when third in Group 2 at the Curragh, last of 5 in Champagne Stakes and fourth in Royal Lodge. Vulnerable to less exposed types again.
First Cornerstone shaped well when third on debut at Down Royal and vastly improved when landing a listed race at Tipperary and 4-runner Group 2 at the Curragh. This is tougher, but he's already smart.
Kingsbarns is a Galileo colt who justified market strength when bolting up in Navan maiden earlier this month. Form nothing special but open to signifcant improvement for yard with excellent record in this race.
Sir Patrick Moore is an Astronomer Royal colt who won first 2 starts before showing useful form in defeat in France after. Looks out of his depth in this company, however.
Steeler has been a progressive colt who followed up his listed win at York when a ready winner of Royal Lodge at Newmarket 4 weeks ago. Has the best form on offer but yet to race on going softer than good.
Trading Leather finished second in listed race at Leopardstown on debut before landing odds in maiden at Gowran. Took form to another level when game winner of Group 3 at Newmarket 2 weeks ago and has to be respected.
Van der Neer has won both starts so far, landing maiden at Yarmouth before comfortably winning 4-runner minor event at Leicester recently. Representing yard who has strong crop of 2-y-os. Should stay.
Timeform 1-2-3:
1. Steeler
2. Kingsbarns
3. Trading Leather
Timeform view: Kingsbarns is bidding to give Aidan O'Brien his seventh win in this race but he's likely to be a skinny price for what he has achieved and preference is for Steeler, who has the best form in the book and should run a big race if handling the ground. Trading Leather is another to consider.
