Hernandez celebrates his winner
Manchester United win thrilling encounter at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Liverpool are pegged back by Everton and Newcastle grab last gasp winner...
Manchester United were matched at 5.04/1 as they ended Chelsea's unbeaten start to the season in a dramatic contest at Stamford Bridge.
The Reds were 2-0 up after 12 minutes thanks to an own goal by David Luiz and a Robin van Persie strike. The Blues regained their composure, however, and when Juan Mata curled in a superb free-kick on the stroke of half-time it was game on. They picked up where they left off after the break and when Nascimento Ramires' equalised, Chelsea looked like the team most likely to go on and win.
But then they had two players sent off, first when Branislav Ivanovic brought down Ashley Young and then, more controversially, when Fernando Torres was give a second yellow card for diving. United had 20 minutes to make their two man advantage count and they did so when substitute Javier Hernandez showed great agility to turn in the winner.
The game had everything and it will be fascinating to see if it gives United impetus to take the initiative in the title race. Early signs suggest Betfair punters think they will: Sir Alex Ferguson's men are 2.89/5 favourites to win the league with Chelsea 4.1n/a.
In the Merseyside derby, the away side also took an early lead through an own goal. Leighton Baines was the unlucky Everton defender as he deflected Luis Suarez's strike in to the home team's net. Six minutes later the Uruguayan headed in to make it 2-0 to Liverpool.
Everton were quick to strike back as Leon Osman and Steven Naismith both found the net before half-time. After the break it was fraught and fast as neither team gave each other any time on the ball. Liverpool had come in to 1.211/5 when they were 0-2 up but the draw, which touched 8.07/1, was the fair outcome.
Newcastle United had Papiss Cisse to thank as they managed to steal all three points in injury time of their match against West Brom. Demba Ba gave the hosts a first-half lead but Romelu Lukaku's 55th minute header looked like it might have earned his team a draw as Newcastle touched 55.054/1. However, Cisse's goal gave the Magpies their first win in five.
Tottenham are up to fifth after they were matched at 2.26/5 as they beat Southampton at St Mary's. Gareth Bale put Spurs ahead against his old team and Clint Dempsey looked to have given them an unassailable 2-0 lead before half-time. However, Saints fought back after the break and Jay Rodriguez gave them real hope with a 66th minute goal. However, the visitors hung on for a victory which puts them fourth in the table.
