For the first time since Nick Faldo, Team Europe can call upon the talents of the world's leading player. Three prestigious victories over the past month, including by an eight shot margin at the PGA for his second major title, have propelled Rory clear of the chasing pack and it could be a long time before he surrenders the number one ranking. Before Europeans get complacent though, we should remember that strokeplay rankings rarely offer a useful guide to Ryder Cup performance, as Tiger Woods can testify. Overall, McIlroy's career record in matchplay compares unfavourably to strokeplay although he thrived in this format when runner-up at February's WGC-Accenture event.
