Roberto Mancini needs to find a clean sheet from somewhere
After Manchester City made it four games without a win, Christian Crowther examines whether fans should be getting worried...
Winning the Capital One Cup may not have been top of Roberto Mancini's priority list but the manner of Manchester City's defeat will not sit well with fans.
As was the case in the Bernabeu last week, City went 2-1 up in the second half only to relinquish their lead before going on to lose the match, albeit in extra time last night.
For City, the result marks the latest setback in a four-game winless run, leaving question marks over Mancini's tactics this season.
Defeat away to Real Madrid is one thing, however, losing to an Aston Villa side which arrived fresh from a going over by newly promoted Southampton, is quite another.
It was certainly not a weak side which Mancini put out, if such a thing is even possible at the Etihad given the available talent in the squad. The overriding cause for concern is the amount of goals which the Premier League champions are conceding.
They only conceded 29 goals in the league last season and have already allowed almost a quarter of that tally in many in just five games, letting in an average of two goals per game from eight in all competitions.
Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott remain two of the best defenders in the country but it seems to be further up the pitch where City are not defending properly.
Javi Garcia looks like a good addition, though City have suffered, in the Premier League at least, from the absence of Gareth Barry who offered solid protection to the back four last season.
With the attacking players available, City will always create chances, they just need to find a way of defending as a team again, an attribute which was so evident in the last campaign.
Most surprisingly, the swagger which City adopted in winning the title last year is missing and only a victory can begin to reinstall their mojo.
A win is no doubt waiting just around the corner so panic buttons are on standby for now, although a clean sheet would probably be ten times more important against Fulham.
Mancini's men are 1.8810/11 to record that elusive win at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
City's shock defeat came on a night of drama in the Capital One Cup as a highly determined Leeds performance ensured that Everton's name would not be appearing in the hat for the fourth-round draw.
Similarly, Roberto Martinez's mercurial Wigan side stunned the Upton Park crowd with a 4-1 victory and the Latics now lie at 29.028/1 to scoop the trophy ahead of the draw.
Elsewhere, Chelsea ensured safe passage to the next round by blowing away an understrength Wolves side 6-0 at Stamford Bridge and the Blues are now understandably favourites at 5.95/1 to win the cup.
