Hulk's signing shows Zenit mean business in Europe this season
The gate may be closed on fresh arrivals to the Premier League but some big-money moves have gone through on the continent in the last 24 hours...
Chelsea target Hulk is the biggest mover with the Brazilian forward completing a sensational 32 million switch to Zenit St Petersburg along with Benfica star Axel Witsel.
The Russian champions are believed to have paid around the same colossal fee to get the 23-year-old Belgian, taking their spending spree to around 64 million.
Both players have signed five-year deals at the club which is bankrolled by Russian energy giant Gazprom.
Such huge investments are clearly geared towards progress through to the Champions League knockout stages for a second successive campaign.
Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti steered his side through to the round-of-16 for the first time in the club's history last season, only to succumb to Benfica over two legs.
However, with these marquee signings, it would appear that the target is to advance further still this time around and, with a fairly lightweight group, this is a real possibility.
Group C does contain AC Milan, but the Italians have lost key players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva to Paris St-Germain.
Spanish side Malaga are Champions League virgins and are also facing off-field turmoil, leaving Anderlecht who haven't progressed from the group stage since 2000/01.
Given these landmark signings and the make up of the group, backing Zenit to qualify as Group C winners has real appeal at 3.3512/5.
Another club prepared to spend big in the quest for European glory are Paris St-Germain, who have just added Dutch international right back Gregory van der Wiel to their star-studded ranks. He leaves Ajax having made 137 appearances for the Eredivisie champions.
Carlo Ancelotti's team managed to avoid most of the European giants in a favourable looking Group A where Porto look to be their main rivals.
The Parisians are available at 2.47/5 to wrap up a group which also includes Dinamo Zagreb and Dinamo Kiev.
A last-minute mover closer to home was Chelsea's Raul Meireles, who joins former Liverpool teammate Dirk Kuyt at Turkish club Fenerbahce in an 8 million deal.
Fenerbahce are second favourites to wrestle the Turkish Super League title back from rivals Galatasaray after finishing runners-up to them last season.
